Chris Ottinger, head of worldwide distribution for Amazon’s recently established MGM Studios Division, is now offering high-profile titles such as “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” and “Citadel,” which are said to be among the studio’s most expensive productions, to third parties. Additionally, two forthcoming series – the spy thriller “Butterfly,” based on a graphic novel, and the action-packed series “Countdown,” featuring Jensen Ackles (“The Boys”) – will also be distributed by Ottinger’s team.
These last two titles won’t be accessible until 18 months after their respective seasons conclude, adhering to the conventional pattern of window release. “Countdown” is expected to launch in late June, with “Butterfly” premiering towards the end of summer. The response from buyers during the company’s LA Screenings presentation was overwhelmingly favorable, as reported by Ottinger.
Regarding the “Lord of the Rings” series, Ottinger stated: “We aim for high prices as it’s a high-quality product. The first season of ‘The Rings of Power’ broke records as the biggest TV series premiere on Prime Video, and the second season was the most-watched returning series at that time on the platform. However, the pricing ultimately depends on the distributor and where they intend to air it. If someone wants it in a prime-time slot like Thursday at 8 p.m., I anticipate a high price tag.
After its debut at the LA Screenings in May 2023, Amazon MGM Studios’ distribution division has released over 50 Amazon Original Movies and managed sales for popular series like “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Fargo,” “Vikings,” “James Bond,” “Creed,” and “Road House.
Ottinger, a veteran in the industry with over a decade of experience leading MGM distribution, stated that we released top-tier library titles on Prime Video. These releases were simultaneously aired on other platforms to examine their impact on Prime Video’s performance and whether they would either enhance it like Netflix or consume our own viewership. The results showed a neutral to positive response for Prime Video.
Ever since I’ve joined this exciting world of film distribution, I’ve been proudly representing my company at major industry events like the Upfront and LA Screenings, rubbing shoulders with giants such as Warner Bros., NBCUniversal, and CBS. The next big stop on our calendar is MIPCOM where we’ll be showcasing our 2026 lineup – both current and upcoming titles. Throughout the year, I make it a point to participate in approximately ten to twelve markets.
Discussions are being initiated with our regular partners, including ITV, BBC, TF1, M6, Mediaset (from Spain and Italy), RTL, ProSieben, and ZDF (in Germany). In Latin America, the major clients are Televisa (Mexico) and Globo (Brazil). The pay/TV cable industry continues to operate as usual, despite a more difficult business environment.
Currently, Amazon Prime Video boasts over 200 million users worldwide, trailing slightly behind Netflix’s estimated 300 million subscribers.
