James Gunn’s Superman film isn’t shying away from its impact as it gears up to present the new DC Universe to global cinema-goers. The Man of Steel won’t embark on his quest solo; instead, he’ll have a team of heroes aiding him, such as Mister Terrific, Green Lantern, and Hawkgirl. However, Gunn isn’t keen on overexposing well-known characters, and the newest character joining the movie demonstrates that the director is adopting a strategy from his previous employer, Disney.
Although Baby Joey has not been featured in any trailers, he is a hot topic among fans due to his presence in Superman’s upcoming toy line. Most discussions revolve around deciphering his character identity, as few DC Comics characters share a resemblance with him. However, many are underestimating the possibility that Baby Joey might be based on existing DC characters but will likely be transformed by Gunn into an original character to add depth and intrigue to the story of Superman beyond his fights against Lex Luthor and his troops (explore the potential plot of 2025’s Superman).
It is plausible that Baby Joey serves as a nod to Jonathan Mason, the offspring of Metamorpho and Sapphire Stagg. Much like his father, Baby Joey possesses the ability to transform his physical form. However, he exhibits an advantage over his dad, as he can also change other objects, granting him an impressive level of power.
Instead of making his grandson work for his organization, thereby turning him into a criminal, Simon Stagg’s grandson was manipulated by his grandfather in this manner. Metamorpho, disapproving of the exploitation of his son, steps in and attempts to offer him an alternate, more positive life path.
In the upcoming movie “Superman,” scheduled for release on July 11, 2025, similar events may unfold. Metamorpho appears to be part of Luthor’s scheme to neutralize Superman, and given that he’s not typically a villain in the comics, it might be that he’s being coerced into this role.
If Luthor holds onto Baby Joey, it might prompt Metamorpho to bide his time for the perfect opportunity to retaliate. On the other hand, Gunn’s experience with Disney could suggest a more significant part for Baby Joey in the upcoming Superman tale.
How Superman’s Baby Joey Could Just Be Another in a Long Line of Formidable Baby Creatures
It seems that pop culture always has an abundance of lovable troublemakers. In 2025, Stitch will return to the big screen in Disney’s latest live-action adaptation, and everyone is eagerly anticipating Grogu, the tiny companion of Din Djarin from The Mandalorian.
These types of characters have wide-ranging appeal, as they can captivate both young audiences and adults alike. Additionally, their popularity has led to significant merchandise sales. This successful approach is one that even Gunn employed in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.
Following a heartrending demise of Groot towards the climax of “Guardians of the Galaxy”, the wooden creature reappears in infancy during the movie’s after-credits sequence, grooving to tunes and perplexing Drax.
In “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” he’s a bit more mature, causing mischief and scaring his fair share of creatures in the film. Yet, it’s hard for anyone to stay angry with him for long due to his irresistible charm and moments when he truly comes through when needed.
In “Avengers: Infinity War,” Groot undergoes an expansion of his role, where he appears as a teenager reluctant to participate in the current mission. However, as the severity of the situation becomes apparent, he steps up, assisting Thor during his critical moment and amputating his own limb for Thor to use as a handle for his new weapon, Stormbreaker. Throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Groot’s development is marked by his time spent as a child, and it seems that Baby Groot, or Joey, could be following a similar path.
Although Gunn has faced criticism in the past for excessively self-referencing, it’s difficult to find fault with this instance. The DC Universe is in dire need of assistance as it embarks on its cinematic voyage, and Baby Joey appears to be a uniquely engaging Gunn character that could captivate the internet.
Maybe he’s even such a hit that he lands his own streaming series like Groot.
