In the eighth episode of Season 1 from The Answer Studio’s “Anne Shirley,” we’ll call it “I Won’t Change Who I Am.” This Spring 2025 series, an applauded adaptation of L.M. Montgomery’s timeless novel “Anne of Green Gables,” has been a hit with both longtime fans and new admirers of Anne Shirley’s tale. The last seven episodes have garnered great acclaim from viewers.
In last week’s episode, titled “I’ve Been Making Mistakes, but Each Mistake Has Helped to Cure Me of My Shortcomings,” we witnessed two crucial moments in Anne’s family and academic life, as well as a classic and amusing scene from Anne of Green Gables. This time, the mischief found Anne at the Lake of Shining Waters, and unfortunately for her, it was Gilbert Blythe who stepped in to save the day when she got into trouble.

In keeping with the tradition for all “Anne Shirley” titles, Episode 8’s name is taken directly from a statement by Anne herself within the story. This phrase reinforces the evolving themes of Anne’s emotional growth and self-awareness, which have been beautifully portrayed throughout the 2025 anime series. The quote used for
“I’m not under the Green Gables any more, and I’ve begun real life.” – Anne Shirley, Chapter 33
Anne stated, “I prefer to remain true to myself, rather than being adorned by diamonds throughout my life. I am happy being Anne of Green Gables, cherishing my strand of pearl beads.
~ Chapter 33, Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
What Happened in Anne Shirley Episode 7?
Anne Nearly Drowned Pretending to Be a Figure of Legend, & Began to Prepare for College
In one of Anne’s amusing escapades with her companions in Avonlea, we find her embarking on another whimsical adventure involving her imaginative fantasies. When they discover an empty rowboat on Barry’s Pond (or the Lake of Shining Waters), Anne and her friends see it as a chance to play out their creative scheme. They set sail in the boat, pretending it is a solemn funeral barge, transporting Anne – who is acting as Lady Elaine, a sorrowful and romantic figure from Arthurian lore. Through each of these misadventures, Anne learns valuable lessons that help her overcome her shortcomings.
In a dangerous predicament, the boat sprouts a hole and Anne, who can’t swim, holds on to a nearby stack, terrified. To her chagrin, Gilbert Blythe rescues her. Despite her frequent fantasies, she doesn’t welcome her scholastic adversary (and the one every schoolgirl adores) playing the hero. This scene in Anne of Green Gables is famous and significant because it triggers Anne to ponder the root of her displeasure towards Gilbert, signifying a shift in her personal development.
The Rest of Episode 7 Focuses on Anne’s Education & the Cuthberts
Marilla fulfills her commitment to enhance Anne’s education when Miss Stacy proposes enrolling Anne in an advanced course. In earlier episodes, Marilla had suggested that Anne might require something beyond the educational resources of Avonlea. Anne’s teacher shares this viewpoint, leading to a significant change in Anne and Diana’s paths, as Diana’s parents are traditional and do not advocate for higher education for girls.
As Anne finds herself on the brink of a promising future (pursuing it now), there arises the bitter taste of another heartache, as Episode 7 delves into Matthew’s health complications. The conclusion of this episode leaves us in suspense about his condition, hoping for more clarity in Episode 8. However, the sneak peek at the end of Episode 7 provided no additional insights on this matter, but it did show Anne preparing for an entrance exam for Queen’s College.
