As a seasoned movie reviewer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Ryan Murphy’s latest offering, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” is as captivating as ever, albeit with a twist of controversy.

In response to Ryan Murphy’s new series, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the Menendez family has expressed disappointment with what they consider an uninformed and inaccurate portrayal. In a post on Lyle’s Facebook page, Erik wrote, “I feel we have progressed beyond the falsehoods and offensive characterizations of Lyle, reducing him to a caricature based on harmful and obvious lies prevalent in the show. I can only assume this was intentional. With a heavy heart, I must say, I believe Ryan Murphy lacks the necessary understanding about our true experiences to produce this series without malicious intentions.” Erik further criticized the show for its “vile and appalling character depictions of Lyle and myself, as well as the disheartening slander it presents.

The main focus of Murphy’s series revolves around the trial of the Menendez brothers, who allegedly murdered their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty,” not for their inheritance but as a form of self-defense. They claimed that their parents subjected them to physical and emotional abuse, with their father also accused of sexually abusing them in their childhood years. The Menendez family’s statement further clarifies that the portrayal of Lyle in the series is fictional, describing it as excessively dramatic and absurd, even if presented as fiction, it would be dull, ridiculous, uninspired, and reminiscent of writing found in adult films. It remains uncertain whether they had ever watched another Murphy production prior to this one.
