Eric Roberts Apologizes to Sister Julia Roberts After Taking Credit for Her Oscar-Winning Career: ‘It Was An Asinine Thing to Say’

As a film enthusiast with a keen interest in Hollywood dynamics, I find Eric Roberts‘ memoir, “Runaway Train,” to be a fascinating read. The revelations about his relationship with his sister Julia are particularly intriguing. While it’s refreshing to see him apologize for his past statements, one can’t help but wonder if this is a case of too little, too late.

In his latest memoir titled “Runaway Train,” Eric Roberts expresses regret to his sister Julia Roberts for past comments he made claiming responsibility for her successful and award-winning acting career. Notably, in an interview with Vanity Fair in 2018, he stated: “Without me, there wouldn’t be a Julia Roberts or Emma Roberts as celebrities, actresses, and I take great pride in that.

He also expressed his pride, saying, “Everyone recognizes that I was the pioneer, and I truly was far ahead.” At that moment, he pointed out, “I was the first to receive both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination, so I am pleased about that achievement.

Currently, Eric is expressing regret in his autobiography (as reported by People) stating, “I sincerely hope that Julia will find it in her heart to forgive me. My remark was foolish.

In the book, Eric mentions that his drug abuse significantly contributed to the deterioration of his relationships with his sisters, Julia, Lisa Roberts Gillan, and Nancy Motes.

Roberts expresses that it’s not surprising if they developed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder due to the times they felt threatened by him. He states that Lisa and Julia, who required affection and security, unfortunately experienced fear and apprehension instead.

Indeed, the most significant outcome from my drug issues was losing custody of Emma,” he explains in reference to the court dispute over their daughter, actress Emma Roberts, whom he co-parents with Kim Cunningham.

He expresses that he’ll always be Julia’s brother and Emma Robert’s father, a role he intends to fulfill honorably and gracefully throughout his life. One of the motivations behind writing the book is to step aside with pride as part of this commitment.

During an interview with Vanity Fair back in 2018, Eric candidly confessed that he could be quite draining to be around in his younger years. He described himself as being overly critical, quick to complain, and struggling to truly appreciate joy. It seemed that everyone in his world needed a respite occasionally, and it’s possible that even Julia, a significant person in his life, might have felt the need for some time off too.

In a chat on the “Still Here Hollywood” podcast recently, Eric shared that he is asked not to discuss his sister Julia by her. He stated, “I adore my sister deeply, but she prefers I don’t discuss her, and so I respect that.

Eric’s memoir, “Runaway Train,” is now available for purchase.
