Eric Dane on Cal’s Future on ‘Euphoria,’ Missing His ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Abs and KJ Apa Wanting to Hit Him While Shooting ‘One Fast Move’

As a movie reviewer who has seen his fair share of Hollywood comebacks, I must say Eric Dane‘s transformation is nothing short of remarkable. The man has been through the wringer, as he so eloquently put it, but he’s come out on the other side with a renewed vigor and a contagious enthusiasm for his craft.

Eric Dane is full of gratitude.

“The actor shares with me on a Tuesday Zoom call during promotion for his latest independent film, ‘One Fast Move’, that he’s faced some tough times. However, he’s currently enjoying the process,” is one way to paraphrase this sentence in a more natural and easy-to-read manner.

For quite some time, Dane’s personal matters were frequently featured in gossip magazines. More recently, he revealed on Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast that his character Dr. Mark Sloan (also known as McSteamy) was written off the popular ABC show “Grey’s Anatomy” partly because of his real-life struggles with substance abuse.

But that was then.

Over the past few years, Dane has had a very active schedule. Besides playing a negligent father and a former motorcycle racing champion whose son (Apa) re-enters his life in “One Fast Move,” he also starred in this summer’s action flick “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” alongside Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

Additionally, there’s the series “Euphoria.” Dane has earned praise for his portrayal of Cal Jacobs, a deeply troubled and secretive father of Jacob Elordi’s character. It was revealed in July that the show will come back for its third season following rumors and production issues that had left some assuming that Zendaya and her team were finished with their HBO run.

“Dane expresses his delight, stating he had high hopes for its return, and now he’s thrilled. He acknowledges there’s a significant demand for it among viewers. The audience is vast, and he enjoys creating it. He appreciates collaborating with Sam Levinson. He enjoys the process immensely. HBO supports us in our creative freedom, as we can essentially do whatever we wish.”

He discussed Cal’s future with Levinson. “The first thing I told Sam at the end of Season 2 was, ‘I don’t want to be incarcerated,'” Dane explains. “So I’m almost absolutely positive that I won’t be in prison…Whatever else happens after that, I’m okay with it.”

As a dedicated cinephile immersed in the gripping world of “Euphoria”, I can attest that its intensity lingers long after the camera stops rolling. On my commute home, the haunting images often linger, and there are rare occasions when the turmoil seeps into my house. However, for the most part, time heals, and a peaceful night’s rest always seems to provide solace.

Regarding “Grey’s Anatomy,” he chuckles when inquired about his daughters’ opinions on him portraying “McSteamy.” He recalls, “My 12-year-old, who began watching it a couple of years back, once looked at me and asked, ‘Dad, whatever happened to your six-pack?'” This was no joke, he assures us.

At 51, the actor confidently believes he can regain his toned abs with some extra dedication. “All I need is a bit more effort,” Dane explains. “I own a fitness equipment, but I’m not utilizing it as much as necessary. I plan to get back to using that regularly.”

In its 21st season, there’s speculation about whether “Grey’s Anatomy” character portrayed by Dane might be still alive and could possibly reappear on the show. (He made an appearance during a dream sequence in 2020 when Meredith Grey was comatose due to COVID.)

“He responds quickly, ‘I believe I followed the plan perfectly during the show. My stay seemed just right, and regardless of the circumstances surrounding my departure, I think everything unfolded exactly as it should have.'”

He goes on to say, “Currently, I don’t tune in to ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, and I didn’t watch much of it when I was part of the show, but let me tell you, I had a blast working on it. The cast shared an amazing camaraderie. Whenever I’d arrive on set, I’d feel like, ‘I really enjoy being around these people.'”

Daniel also shared a comparable encounter with the movie “One Fast Move.” During production, he developed an exceptionally tight bond with his co-star, whom he refers to as Apa. In his own words, “He’s definitely someone I want to keep in my life.”

In the movie I helped bring to life under Kelly Blatz’s direction, there were several emotionally charged moments between me, portrayed as Dane, and my on-screen counterpart, Apa. One of these scenes resonated with me particularly, as after we wrapped it up, KJ confided in me, “Eric, I must admit I had the urge to punch you.” I responded, “I get it. I believe that’s exactly how your character was meant to feel.”

“One Fast Move” premieres on Prime Video on Aug. 8.
