Epic Games CEO Says Battle Royale Is The Best Shooter Genre Invented

2017 saw the battle royale game style reign supreme, with titles like Fortnite, PUBG, Apex Legends, and others emerging during this period and capturing the spirit of gaming. As we near a decade since this golden era of battle royales, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney contends that it represents the finest shooting game genre currently available.

In an interview with IGN, Sweeney stated that the shooter genre has continually evolved by introducing fresh game types as technology advanced. He noted that battle royale is a remarkable development within this genre, crediting both Japanese filmmakers and Brendan Greene for their contributions to its magic. However, he emphasized that it’s not the final evolution; more innovations are on the horizon, made possible by emerging technologies, which will lead to improved games and unexpected creative breakthroughs.

Sweeney pointed out that many people continue to perceive Fortnite only as a battle royale game, but Epic Games sees Fortnite as more than that. They view Fortnite as a comprehensive platform where users create their own modes and developers introduce their own, like Fortnite Festival and Rocket Racing. Despite this, it’s worth noting that the battle royale mode, including its variations such as Zero Build, remains the most played version of the game.

Our main goal is to make people understand that Fortnite encompasses all types of gaming experiences, and this understanding won’t happen overnight. We have a lot more exciting genres to bring to life,” Sweeney explained.

Despite offering various other game modes and categories, it’s only the Battle Royale style that has managed to achieve unprecedented popularity within Fortnite. Meanwhile, Fortnite enthusiasts can look forward to a new feature: the ability to construct using Lego-like bricks with the Unreal Editor in the near future.
