Enthusiasts of “Final Fantasy VII” and Nintendo enthusiasts might be in for a treat over the next few years. The Switch 2 Showcase has confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will come out on the upcoming handheld device, but a video showcasing Square Enix’s renowned series hints at more to come. The announced Nintendo Switch 2 demonstrated an impressive lineup of third-party games during the Direct, including titles as recent as Split Fiction, as massive as Elden Ring, and as graphically demanding as Cyberpunk 2077. Many of these games seem to be tailored for the Nintendo console specifically.
More of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series might arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2
For the past few weeks, Nintendo has been regularly uploading Creator’s Voice videos on their YouTube channel (Nintendo of America), featuring several third-party developers who announced games during the April 2nd Direct. Today, they spotlighted Square Enix and their production, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. This game was launched in 2020, marking the beginning of a trilogy of remakes. The second installment, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, came out last year, but we’re still waiting for more details about the third game in this series.
One notable instance from today’s Creator’s Voice video features Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of the series, expressing that he believed the potential Nintendo Switch 2 console would be capable of running the entirety of the Final Fantasy VII remake series he was working on. Considering other third-party games sharing similar sentiments about the Switch 2, this isn’t unexpected. However, a subtle yet significant point is worth highlighting: Hamaguchi expressed confidence that the system could handle the “series,” not just the remake. This is significant because, outside of their initial exclusivity to PlayStation consoles, the first two games in this trilogy have only been released on PC, so transitioning to another console is a major move.
Despite Xbox shifting exclusive games like Gears of War: Reloaded towards PlayStation over the past year, Sony and PlayStation have remained constant. Interestingly, both Remake and Rebirth were console exclusives on PlayStation for approximately a year before they became available on PC. If this trend continues with the upcoming third title, it could mean that Rebirth might not arrive on the Switch 2 until about another year and a half has passed. After this transition, we can expect a wait before more details emerge about the third installment in the popular series.
The news about these big games running on a Nintendo console is quite surprising, considering their size. Moreover, it’s interesting that these games are debuting on Nintendo ahead of Xbox, a console comparable in power to the PlayStation 5, which has been around for some time now. Recently, Square Enix expressed intentions to go multi-platform in the future, leading one to wonder why Xbox was left out initially. It seems likely that the next game in the series will start as a PlayStation exclusive for at least a year, following the pattern set by the first two games. However, since the third game may not release for several more years, there’s room for changes to occur before then. One might ask: Will the series make its way to Xbox before then?
