Emmys: Please Consider These 16 Latino Actors Before Voting, From Selena Gomez to Ricky Martin

As a big fan of diverse representation in media, I’m thrilled to see such a remarkable lineup of talented Latinx actors and actresses gracing our screens with their exceptional performances. Each one of them brings unique perspectives and depth to their respective roles, making it an honor to witness their growth and success in Hollywood.

Before you turn in your Emmy ballots, voters, please don’t forget about the Latinos… again.

As a Latina woman who has worked tirelessly in the entertainment industry for over two decades, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the stark underrepresentation of my community in Emmy-nominated actors. This year, I watched as 1,957 names were submitted for consideration across all performer categories, yet only a mere handful of us Latinos made the cut, representing less than 6% of the total submissions.

In evaluating the 16 acting categories that offer 94 nomination opportunities, EbMaster’s Emmy predictions suggest the most optimistic outcome for Latinos could involve receiving five nods. However, none of these nominations are guaranteed, and there is a possibility that no Latino actors will be recognized. This news may elicit frustrated responses from those who are weary of discussions on diversity. Rest assured, the conversation wearies us as well, but progress isn’t advancing at an acceptable pace. The statistics don’t deceive.

Over the course of 96 years for the Oscars, 76 years for the Emmys, and 77 years for the Tonys, a total of 5 Oscar awards, 10 Emmy awards, and 10 Tony awards have been bestowed upon Latino actors.

The representation of Latinos in American films, TV shows, and award ceremonies has been a subject of concern for quite some time due to the noticeable imbalance. With Latinos comprising a substantial and expanding segment of the US population, their involvement in the entertainment industry is still insufficient when compared to their numbers. This disparity has become a topic of intense discussion and demands for improvement in recent years.

Earlier this year, the TV Academy’s Board of Governors chose Cris Abrego as their chair, making her the first Latina to hold this position. This is a small step towards potential progress and greater representation for Latinos in the industry. However, it is essential to remember that Latinos are not unseen in Hollywood and continue to advocate for visibility.

In 2021, Latino actors have diverse opportunities across various genres and platforms in the entertainment industry. For instance, Bad Bunny is a contender for hosting “Saturday Night Live,” while many others emerge from streaming services and network procedural dramas and comedies. Apple’s series “Acapulco” presents eleven actors, including Eugenio Derbez, and NBC features George Lopez as part of their roster. Some performers, such as Néstor Carbonell, Camila Mendes, Frankie Quiñones, and Jaime Camil, have been nominated for multiple projects.

On June 13, Emmy award-winning actor John Leguizamo (from “The Network’s The Green Veil”) placed an appeal in the New York Times, urging the Television Academy to consider change.

As a movie-loving audience member, I implore you, Hollywood, to make this the year of meaningful transformation. Let’s strive for genuine equality and ensure that artists from all ethnic backgrounds are given their due recognition – not just in one niche category, but across all aspects of filmmaking.

I truly hope that as the voting deadline approaches at 10 p.m. PST, fans will take Leguizamo’s advice seriously. This could potentially open the door for an impressive number of extremely skilled actors to finally gain the acknowledgement they deserve.

Here are sixteen actors suggested by EbMaster, listed in alphabetical order for your consideration before submitting your ballots:

On July 17, the Emmy nominations will be revealed. The Creative Arts and Governors Gala ceremonies are scheduled for September 7-8, spanning over two nights. The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast on ABC on September 15.

In my recent streaming adventures, I’ve come across a handful of performances that truly stood out. Let me share some honorable mentions, all delivered by talented individuals who graced our screens this season.

    Moisés Arias – ‘Fallout’

Emmys: Please Consider These 16 Latino Actors Before Voting, From Selena Gomez to Ricky Martin

Category: Supporting actor in a drama series

Arias shines in his role as Norm MacLean in Prime Video’s game adaptation, directed by Jonathan Nolan. Despite having a small amount of screentime, he leaves a lasting impression. If you’ve seen his memorable performances in films such as “The Kings of Summer” (2013) and “The King of Staten Island” (2020), then it’s no surprise that he would be considered for the top-tier nominated series (as per our predictions). Why not include him in the ride to success?

    Néstor Carbonell – ‘Shogun’

Emmys: Please Consider These 16 Latino Actors Before Voting, From Selena Gomez to Ricky Martin

Category: Guest Actor in a Drama Series

Néstor Carbonell, a renowned Cuban actor recognized for his work in TV shows like “Bates Motel” and “Lost,” as well as films such as “The Dark Knight,” brings intensity and unpredictability to the first episode of FX’s drama series “Shōgun.” In this installment titled “Anjin,” Carbonell depicts Vasco Rodrigues, a Spanish sailor who journeys from Portugal and introduces Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) to the Japanese culture. His captivating portrayal of Rodrigues sets the tone for the series’ epic narrative. Additionally, Carbonell is being considered for a supporting role in Apple’s “The Morning Show.”

    Liza Colón-Zayas – ‘The Bear’

Emmys: Please Consider These 16 Latino Actors Before Voting, From Selena Gomez to Ricky Martin

Category: Supporting actress in a comedy series

In the captivating second season of “The Bear,” one scene that particularly resonated with me is when Sydney, brilliantly portrayed by Ayo Edebiri, shares her decision to enroll Tina, beautifully acted by Colón-Zayas, in cooking school. The elation evident on Sydney’s face, the heartfelt embrace, and the tears brimming in Tina’s eyes – these moments can’t be learned at acting school. They represent a depth that words alone cannot convey. Her absence from the lineup would be unforgivable.

    Rosario Dawson – ‘Ahsoka’

Emmys: Please Consider These 16 Latino Actors Before Voting, From Selena Gomez to Ricky Martin

Category: Lead actress in a drama series

A Puerto Rican, Taíno, Cuban, and African actress with three decades of impressing audiences takes center stage as the title character in a Disney+ drama series, wielding a lightsaber. Known for her dedication to acting, she’s earned the respect of her peers but hasn’t received widespread recognition yet. Wouldn’t her first significant role, “Ahsoka,” generate exciting headlines despite her impressive film and TV work?

    Eugenio Derbez – ‘Acapulco’

Emmys: Please Consider These 16 Latino Actors Before Voting, From Selena Gomez to Ricky Martin

Category: Supporting actor in a comedy series

Derbez, a versatile Mexican actor, director, writer, and producer, excels in various fields. His company, 3Pas, manages top-notch distribution for both television and theater projects, such as his Apple TV+ comedy series “Acapulco.” In this bilingual production, Derbez portrays Maximo, a prosperous magnate residing in Malibu. With growing recognition in Latin America and the release of the show in May, he emerges as a potential contender for significant recognition.

Selena Gomez – ‘Only Murders in the Building’

Emmys: Please Consider These 16 Latino Actors Before Voting, From Selena Gomez to Ricky Martin

Category: Lead actress in a comedy series

The “Only Murders in the Building” star has proven her acting prowess and demonstrated her versatility as a comedic performer in the Hulu mystery romp. Gomez’s role as Mabel has been one of the show’s bright spots. Only three Latinas have been nominated in the lead actress comedy category at the Emmys: Rita Moreno (who was nominated in 1983 for “9 to 5”), America Ferrera (who won in 2007 for “Ugly Betty” and received another nom in 2008) and Jenna Ortega (last year for “Wednesday”). Also serving as one of the executive producers, she’ll become the most nominated Latina producer in a comedy series if “Only Murders” picks up another nom. Now, that’s some history.

    Jharrel Jerome – ‘I’m a Virgo’

Emmys: Please Consider These 16 Latino Actors Before Voting, From Selena Gomez to Ricky Martin

Category: Lead actor in a comedy series

In the 2019 Emmy Awards, Jerome became the first and sole Afro-Latino actor to win the Lead Actor (Limited Series) award for his exceptional performance in “When They See Us.” This year, Jerome has been nominated in two different categories. The initial nomination is for his supporting role in the HBO/Max limited series “Full Circle.” The second nomination comes from his work in the quirky comedy “I’m a Virgo,” where he portrays Cootie, an unusual 13-foot-tall teenager who has spent his entire life hidden away and is eventually discovered.

    Salma Hayek – ‘Black Mirror’

Emmys: Please Consider These 16 Latino Actors Before Voting, From Selena Gomez to Ricky Martin

Category: Supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or TV movie

In 2007 and 2008, Hayek received the most nominations as a Latina producer in the comedy series category for “Ugly Betty” on ABC. Later, in the sixth season of “Black Mirror,” she gave a standout performance as herself in the popular episode “Joan Is Awful,” co-starring with Annie Murphy. Despite strong competition in the supporting actress (limited) category, the Oscar-nominated actress from “Frida” proves she can still deliver remarkable acting moments. Let’s provide her with more opportunities to showcase her talent.

John Leguizamo – ‘The Green Veil’

Emmys: Please Consider These 16 Latino Actors Before Voting, From Selena Gomez to Ricky Martin

Category: Lead actor in a drama series

Leguizamo, an Emmy award-winning actor, has tirelessly and courageously advocated for greater representation of Latinos in Hollywood. He is currently nominated for the lead role in the sci-fi drama “The Green Veil,” marking one of his best performances to date. In this series, Leguizamo plays a ruthless FBI agent, showcasing his exceptional acting skills and setting new standards for himself and upcoming Latino actors. Additionally, John Ortiz, a respected co-star and accomplished character actor, is also in contention for the supporting role award.

Marcello Hernández – ‘Saturday Night Live’

Emmys: Please Consider These 16 Latino Actors Before Voting, From Selena Gomez to Ricky Martin

Category: Supporting actor in a comedy series

As a huge fan of “Saturday Night Live” (SNL), I have to admit that the show had its ups and downs during their 49th season. However, there was one shining star who truly stood out for me – Marcello Hernández, the Cuban and Dominican featured cast member. In just his second year on the show, he has left a lasting impression with his hilarious appearances at the “Weekend Update” desk.

    Nava Mau – ‘Baby Reindeer’

Emmys: Please Consider These 16 Latino Actors Before Voting, From Selena Gomez to Ricky Martin

Category: Supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or TV movie

Jessica Gunning, played by Martha in “Baby Reindeer” on Netflix, has been creating a buzz around town. But Nava Mau, an actress from Mexico, beautifully handles the role of Teri, Donny’s girlfriend portrayed by Richard Gadd. If recognized, she would make history as the first Latina trans actress nominated in this category, which is truly fitting.

    Ricky Martin – ‘Palm Royale’

Emmys: Please Consider These 16 Latino Actors Before Voting, From Selena Gomez to Ricky Martin

Category: Supporting actor in a comedy series

Ricky Martin, the beloved Puerto Rican artist, has not only won us over with his music but also piqued interest in his acting abilities. He earned his first Emmy nomination for “American Crime Story” in 2018 as a supporting actor (limited series). Now, he’s aiming for comedy acting kudos with his performance as Robert Diaz, an ex-Korean War Marine and bartender at the Palm Royale resort, amidst a talented cast consisting of Kristen Wiig, Allison Janney, and Carol Burnett. It’s no simple task to make an impression in such esteemed company.

Natalie Morales – ‘The Morning Show’

Emmys: Please Consider These 16 Latino Actors Before Voting, From Selena Gomez to Ricky Martin

Category: Guest actress in a drama series

Natalie Morales, a versatile actress in Hollywood, shines in the third installment of Apple’s “The Morning Show. She portrays Kate Danton, Stanford alumna and closest friend of Stella (Greta Lee). At Stanford, they both took part in Paul Marks’ (Jon Hamm) start-up incubator. Morales’ performance in this series is nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in the guest drama actress category. Noteworthy, this award category is unique as it has previously recognized two Latinas – Rita Moreno from Puerto Rico for “The Rockford Files” in 1978 and Alexis Bledel from Argentina for “The Handmaid’s Tale” in 2017.

Taylor Zakhar Perez – ‘Red, White and Royal Blue’

Emmys: Please Consider These 16 Latino Actors Before Voting, From Selena Gomez to Ricky Martin

Category: Lead actor in a limited or anthology series or TV movie

Zakhar Perez, an actor with Mexican heritage, initially gained fame through teenage romantic comedies like “The Kissing Booth.” However, alongside rising star Nicholas Galitzine, they left an indelible impression on audiences with the touching LGBTQ film “Red, White and Royal Blue.” In this production, Perez portrayed the intriguing role of the U.S. president’s son who falls in love within the British royal family. This unique part paves the way for more complex and engaging roles for him in the future.

    Michaela Jaé Rodriguez – ‘Loot’

Emmys: Please Consider These 16 Latino Actors Before Voting, From Selena Gomez to Ricky Martin

Category: Supporting actress in a comedy series

In 2021, Rodriguez made Emmy history by being the first transgender and Afro-Latina actress nominated in a leading category for “Pose”. She’s now up for two potential nominations. The first is for her role in “American Horror Story: Delicate” in the supporting actress (limited series) category. The second is for her comedic and memorable performance as Sofia, the executive director of Molly Wells’ foundation in Apple’s unexpected comedy hit “Loot”.

    Sofía Vergara – ‘Griselda’

Emmys: Please Consider These 16 Latino Actors Before Voting, From Selena Gomez to Ricky Martin

Category: Lead actress in a limited or anthology series or TV movie

Colombian actress Vergara delivers a fierce and engaging performance as the notorious drug lord Griselda Blanco in Netflix’s popular crime series. Should she be nominated, she would join the ranks of only the second Latina actress recognized in this category, following in the footsteps of Anya Taylor-Joy of Argentinian descent for “The Queen’s Gambit” in 2021. As an executive producer on “Griselda,” Vergara also has the potential to become the second Latina woman nominated in the limited or anthology series category, succeeding Celia D. Costas who was recognized for “Angels in America” in 2004. With four previous Emmy nominations for her beloved role as Gloria Delgado on ABC’s “Modern Family,” this could potentially be Vergara’s year to take home the award.
