2024 Emmy Predictions:
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie
As a devoted television enthusiast who has spent countless hours engrossed in the captivating world of primetime entertainment, I eagerly anticipate the annual Primetime Emmy Awards. With over two decades of viewing under my belt, I can confidently say that this year’s nominations promise to be as exciting and unpredictable as ever!
Weekly Insight (Last Updated: Aug. 19, 2024): This year’s Emmy Awards for Best Supporting Actor presents a fascinating lineup of seven candidates, which makes it one of the most competitive and unpredictable acting categories.
Four actors, Lamorne Morris (“Fargo”), Tom Goodman-Hill (“Baby Reindeer”), John Hawkes (“True Detective: Night Country”) and Lewis Pullman (“Lessons in Chemistry”), are nominated, and their shows are also contenders for the Best Limited or Anthology Series award. Jonathan Bailey (“Fellow Travelers”) is one of three nominees from his show. Treat Williams (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”) represents one of four shows this year with nominations across all major acting categories. These include Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” FX’s “The Bear,” Netflix’s “The Crown,” and surprisingly, “Feud” was not among the Best Limited Series nominees, which seems odd considering its strong performances and other nominations.
Additionally, we find Robert Downey Jr. being the only nominee from HBO’s “The Sympathizer.” In the last four decades, just six actors have managed to secure an Emmy award as the sole representative of their show: Louie Anderson for his supporting comedy role in “Baskets” in 2016, Richard Kiley for his lead role in “A Year in the Life” in 1987, Regina King for her leading role in a limited series called “Seven Seconds” in 2018, Helen Mirren for her performance in “Prime Suspect: The Scent of Darkness” in 1996, Tatiana Maslany for “Orphan Black” in 2016, and Mark Ruffalo for his leading role in a limited series titled “I Know This Much Is True” in 2020.
Despite being widely seen as the favorite due to his recent achievements like “Oppenheimer,” it’s important to note that surpassing his fellow contenders might not be an easy feat, considering that his last Emmy nomination dates back more than two decades from his work on “Ally McBeal.”
In the past, it’s been a trend for the Emmys to bestow multiple categories on the same series, as demonstrated by the recent sweeps of “Succession,” “The Bear,” and “Beef” this year. This pattern can create challenges for a single nominee to emerge victorious. Yet, in 2020, my esteemed Marvel co-star Mark Ruffalo defied these odds and took home an Emmy. The unpredictable nature of award shows during the pandemic era makes it tricky to forecast future results with certainty.
Predicting winners can become more accurate when pairing contenders from the same shows, particularly in recent times. For instance, if you believe Jodie Foster will win for Best Lead Actress (Limited Series or TV Movie), it’s likely that Hawkes is also a strong contender on many ballots. Similarly, if Jon Hamm is your choice for Best Lead Actor (Limited Series or TV Movie), keep an eye out for Morris as he could be a serious competitor. If you anticipate “Baby Reindeer” or “Succession” to have a successful awards night, Goodman-Hill should not be overlooked, even though they may not be as well-known as others in the category.
Moreover, Bailey has recently won a Critics Choice award and is strongly considered to be the standout performer of the year. He might win his first award for his exceptional portrayal of Tim Laughlin, an optimistic congressional staffer who develops a romantic relationship with a World War II veteran in the Showtime miniseries. There’s growing admiration for this British actor within the Hollywood community.
On September 7th and 8th, the Creative Arts and Governors Gala events will take place. Meanwhile, the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcasted on ABC on Sunday, the 15th of September.
