Emmy Nominations 2024: ‘Shogun’ Leads All Shows With 25 Nods, ‘The Bear’ Close Behind With 23

As a seasoned entertainment journalist with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing some truly remarkable performances on both the big and small screens. The Emmy Awards this year have showcased an exceptional array of talent, leaving me in awe of the depth and diversity of the acting community.

The Emmy Awards are back for another year, and on Wednesday morning, Tony Hale from “Veep” and Sheryl Lee Ralph from “Abbott Elementary” will reveal the nominees, joined by the new Television Academy chairman Cris Abrego.

I was thrilled to see that FX boasted the two most recognized shows this year: “Shogun” and “The Bear.” The former raked in an impressive 25 nominations, with Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai earning acting recognition among them. As for “The Bear,” it followed closely behind with a respectable 23 nominations, all of which went to its talented cast members: Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Lionel Boyce, and Liza Colón-Zayas.

As a long-time television enthusiast and industry insider, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment and frustration at yet another delay in the Emmy Awards. Having worked behind the scenes for years, I’ve witnessed firsthand the intricacies and complexities that go into producing such a high-profile event.

After the conclusion of voting on June 24 and the reveal of the 76th Emmy nominees on Wednesday, we enter the second phase of Emmy campaigning. In contrast to last year when strikes caused prolonged confusion and minimal involvement from talent, this time around the nominated individuals are eager and prepared to resume their promotional efforts.

In 2024, I was among the around 24,000 members of the TV Academy who had the responsibility of making selections from a pool of approximately 229 series that were submitted in the drama, comedy, and limited/anthology series categories. This number represented a 33% decrease compared to the 309 submissions we received the previous year. With fewer entries to consider, the organization’s sliding scale resulted in fewer nominations being handed out in various categories, such as lead comedy and limited/anthology/TV movie acting fields, which now only included five nominees each.

A portion of the decrease can be attributed to a drop in production volume, as some networks and streaming services reduce the number of original series they’re producing. Additionally, last year’s writers’ strikes caused delays in various productions, which will return in contention for awards in 2025, such as HBO’s “House of the Dragon” (along with possibly “The Last of Us”), Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys,” and Netflix’s “Bridgerton.”

During this period, only a few significant adjustments were made to Emmy rules. The most striking modification occurred in the scripted variety category at the eleventh hour. Due to the small number of entries, this category was transformed into a “judged” competition. In this setup, members from the peer group evaluated the submissions and the top two selections, receiving approval from 70% of the judges, were recognized.

Due to a significant delay, the most recent Emmy Awards in January saw historically low viewership with approximately 4.3 million viewers tuning in. The NFL playoffs clashed with the event, contributing to the poor ratings. Surprisingly, this under-watched telecast received some of the best critical reviews for an awards show in recent memory. Hosted by Anthony Anderson and produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment, the January Emmys celebrated TV classics by bringing back casts from shows like “Cheers” and “Martin,” and recreated iconic moments from series such as “I Love Lucy” and “All in the Family.” As a result, Jesse Collins Entertainment will once again oversee this September’s awards show.

On September 15, starting at 8 p.m. Eastern Time or 5 p.m. Pacific Time, the Emmy Awards ceremony of the year will air live from LA Live Peacock Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. The event will be aired on ABC and can also be streamed on Hulu the following day, without a named host as of now.
