I’m thrilled to share that I’ve found myself among an extraordinary ensemble for the upcoming queer drama feature “Roar, Hear Me.” The talented Emma Thompson, Anna Friel, Christopher Eccleston, Julian Ovenden, and Rebecca Root have all signed on to bring this story to life. I can hardly wait!
The script is co-written by Lisa McMullin and Ashley Bayston, whose story it tells.
The feature will be directed by Amy Coop and produced by Darren Stuart and David Nichols.
Roar to Be Heard” narrates the tale of a transgender individual who, in the year 2000, waged a prolonged legal struggle against the British government. This battle, which was ultimately victorious, significantly transformed the lives of LGBTQIA+ people residing within the United Kingdom.
In 1981, Elizabeth (Liz) Bellinger exchanged vows with her spouse Michael at the Southwark register office, located in South London. At that time, she was among a small number of transgender individuals in the United Kingdom who had participated in a marriage ceremony. For almost two decades, only her husband was privy to her secret identity. However, in 1998, she initiated a movement to legally acknowledge their union. The case eventually reached court in 2000.
The story unfolds as Elizabeth encounters attorney Bayston, a collaborator with the main scriptwriter McMullin, leading us through the intricate legal maze they navigated over the subsequent three-year period.
Bayston expressed his astonishment, saying, “I never thought this day would come, and now I’m amazed that our tale – the extraordinary saga of Liz and my struggle – will be narrated by such an exceptional ensemble of actors. We used to laugh about a movie being made someday, but I never imagined such youthful and stylish performers would portray us. This story needs to be shared, and they are absolutely the right individuals for the job.
Thompson expressed that the story was incredibly touching, powerful, and humorous, leaving him in tears like an infant. He found it to be a fantastic tale with captivating characters, and he couldn’t help but adore it deeply. In his opinion, it was not only fascinating but also profoundly significant and indispensable.
