Emma Stone Gets Her Head Shaved in Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Bugonia’ Footage, Wes Anderson’s ‘Phoenician Scheme’ Trailer Debuts at CinemaCon

Wes Anderson introduced the quaint universe of “The Phoenician Scheme” onstage at CinemaCon, while Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone presented the eerie, honeycomb-laden “Bugonia” to the crowd in Las Vegas.

I’m thrilled to share that Anderson’s newest espionage thriller, titled “The Phoenician Scheme,” unveiled its first trailer this past Wednesday during Universal’s presentation to theater owners. Excitingly, Focus Features, Universal’s indie arm, will be distributing this film, making it our third collaboration since 2012’s “Moonrise Kingdom” and the upcoming 2023 release, “Asteroid City.

In this upcoming film, Benicio del Toro plays the role of Zsa-zsa Korda, a wealthy European man. Mia Threapleton is cast as his daughter, and Michael Cera acts as her tutor. Although the trailer isn’t yet available to the public, it is known that in the movie, Zsa-zsa Korda lives through a plane crash (his sixth!) and interprets this event as a sign. As a result, he decides to transfer his estate to his daughter. The visual style of the film should resonate with fans of Anderson, as it features several recognizable faces from his cinematic world – including Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, Mathieu Amalric, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Richard Ayoade, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis, and Benedict Cumberbatch – who appear in an extended scene.

Focus provides a quick glimpse into the upcoming film titled “Bugonia,” which represents a brief excerpt from the recent collaboration between Lanthimos and Stone, following their works such as “The Favourite,” “Poor Things,” and “Kinds of Kindness.” This movie is a reimagining of the South Korean sci-fi comedy “Save the Green Planet.” The plot centers around two friends with a penchant for conspiracies who abduct the CEO (Stone) of a large corporation, as they believe this executive to be an alien planning to annihilate Earth.

Accompanied by foreboding music, the preview commences with Jesse Plemmons, portraying a beekeeper-turned-conspiracist, providing the voiceover. “Everything begins with something wondrous: a flower and a hardworking bee,” he intones ominously, as scenes of beehives intersperse. “The laborers collect pollen for the queen. The bees are perishing, and their fellow workers abandon the queen. The colony crumbles.

As the screen dims, I find myself carefully trimming Theron’s lush, red tresses, my eyes locked onto an uncomfortably intimate close-up. The Oscar-winning actress in question appears… less than humanly beautiful.

Starting May 30, ‘The Phoenician Scheme’ will be released in a select number of cinemas, with a wider release following on June 6. Meanwhile, ‘Bugonia’ is set to hit theaters on November 7.”

Or simply:

– From May 30, “The Phoenician Scheme” will have a limited release, then expand widely on June 6.
– On November 7, you can catch “Bugonia” in theaters.

As a passionate cinephile, I missed seeing the visionary directors Anderson, Lanthimos, and Stone at CinemaCon this year. However, their absence was filled by Peter Kujawski, chairman of Focus Features, who enthusiastically showcased their upcoming films and reaffirmed the studio’s unwavering dedication to the theatrical experience.

In the gathering of theater owners, Kujawski emphasized, “Each film we produce is designed to offer a truly immersive cinematic experience.” He couldn’t overstate this point enough.
