As a lifelong film enthusiast who grew up embracing the unusual and the quirky, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming Emily the Strange animated feature! Having spent countless hours immersed in the world of pop culture icons, I can confidently say that Emily is one of the most unique and empowering characters to grace our screens.
What’s black and white and red all over? Emily the Strange!
Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Bad Robot are collaborating to create a feature-length, animated movie that will bring the cherished character onto the silver screen.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Bad Robot is teaming up with the creative mind behind Emily, Rob Reger, who will be executive producing alongside Trevor Duke-Moretz. The script for this project is being crafted by Pamela Ribon, a talented writer whose work includes “Nimona,” “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” and “Moana.” Notably, she was nominated for an Academy Award for her animated short film “My Year of Dicks.” I can’t wait to see this collaboration unfold on the big screen!
Reger praises both our movie’s creative and executive teams, stating they are extraordinary. Each member brings a fresh, insightful viewpoint while appreciating Emily the Strange’s special bond with our reality. Emily embraces everything that is unique and offbeat, making those who identify as strange or different feel less isolated.
For over three decades, Emily and her quartet of sleek black cats have captivated audiences. This independent-minded and clever Emily embodies the DIY spirit, urging people to think independently, take action, and remain true to themselves. She motivates her numerous admirers to embrace their potential, indulge in creativity, and celebrate their uniqueness.
Ribon is thrilled to join the group bringing Emily’s first feature film to life! The animation format perfectly captures her unique and imaginative ideas, and with Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation collaboration, she will really take flight,” said Ribon. “Emily’s fearless, genre-blending approach has always intrigued me. Her combination of intelligence and flair is unparalleled. This project promises to be a blast!
Emily’s world, long envisioned by Duke-Moretz, is now brought to reality in collaboration with Bad Robot, Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, and screenwriter Pamela Ribon.
As a great admirer, I’m thrilled to share that Emily is an everlasting symbol of individuality and empowerment within pop culture, and Pamela Ribon possesses a unique and iconic voice. It’s truly an honor for Warner Bros. Pictures Animation to collaborate with Bad Robot, Rob [Reger] and Trevor [Duke-Moretz] in bringing Emily the Strange to life on the silver screen.

At Bad Robot, we aim to explore the limits of animation’s potential. John Agbaje, SVP of animation at Bad Robot, expressed this sentiment when discussing character Emily, who defies categorization by others. He stated that this character presents an excellent chance for us to stretch those boundaries. We are excited to incorporate her universe into our upcoming animated features. The team working on Emily the Strange possesses a strong affinity for the character, her existing portrayal, and the impact she’ll have on future generations.
The upcoming movie is the next stage in the prosperous Emily the Strange universe of figures, books, comics, video games, clothing, and merchandise, which has been worth millions of dollars. It’s taken a long time to bring Emily’s tale to the big screen: Fox attempted to adapt the film in 2005, while Universal planned a movie with Chloe Grace Moretz in 2010. However, neither project managed to move forward.
Pamela Ribon has three talent agencies handling her: Creative Artists Agency (CAA), Atlas Literary, and Goodman Genow Schenkman Smelkinson + Christopher, LLP. Cosmic Debris and Rob Reger are managed by Verve and attorney Roger Armstrong, with Emily the Strange licensing overseen by Striker. Trevor Duke-Moretz is represented individually by Knol Hanly.
Deadline was first to report the news.
