Emily in Paris Recap: Heartbreak is One Thing, My Ego is Another

As a longtime connoisseur of romantic dramas and a devoted fan of originality, I must say that this latest episode left me feeling like I’ve wandered into a copycat factory disguised as a ballroom. The dance between Emily and Gabriel felt more like an illusion created by the magic of television rather than a heartfelt moment between two people in love.

Emily takes a run, reminding us of where the story started, and finds something intriguing: Paris seems to be overflowing with appealing men. However, don’t let this excite you too much. You might be wondering if this series will finally offer something entertaining, such as its protagonist enjoying her single life in the city of romance? Regrettably, that’s not the case. Emily remains resolute in her pursuit of monotony and predictability. I must admit, it felt rather deceptive to include this clip in the trailer for this season, suggesting Emily would be exploring romantic options when she is instead choosing to stay dull.

1. Apart from her questionable fashion choices dominating the scene, it’s hard to explain Camille’s outfits which seem a strange blend of office wear and lingerie, like a miniskirt with a lace trim that rises in the middle? What on earth is its shape? Emily is running into Camille because Camille and Sofia are residing with Gabriel. In shock, Emily inquires about their sleeping arrangements. The nerve of this girl!! Let them live their lives. She discovers that Gabriel has been relegated to his own couch while the girlfriends share his bed. Given my feelings towards Gabriel, I’m not surprised he’s enduring hardship; I’m just irritated that these young, attractive French individuals are so dedicated to living mundane, uneventful lives.

Gabriel is currently at Emily and Mindy’s house since he can’t find a spot for himself in his own shower. Later, when Emily comes over to chat endlessly about her shock over the “polyamory” happening downstairs (Emily, wake up! It’s possible for people to be poly, get over yourself already) and her excitement over the handsome men of Paris she encountered during her run, it is Gabriel who she confides in. After confirming that Emily has separated from Alfie, Gabriel peeks out of the shower to verify this information.

The main highlight of the episode is a launch event for Heartbreak Perfume, whose bottle resembles the Liberty Bell with its pre-cracked design. For the strategy meeting regarding the night’s plans, Emily dons an unfinished, flowery harness-like accessory that she wears over her usual attire, giving off a vibe reminiscent of Blake Lively on the It Ends With Us press tour (implying pretentiousness). The Heartbreak Ball is a masquerade event. Alfie, in typical fashion, attends the meeting to cause trouble at work. However, Emily manages to maintain her composure and elucidates the theme, which Alfie intentionally fails to grasp. As expected, the use of masks allows people to pretend to be someone they’re not.

Camille bumps into Alfie outside their office, and she expresses remorse for disrupting their relationship with Emily, but Alfie insists they were destined to fail regardless, as Gabriel and Emily seem to have mutual feelings. “Yet,” Camille points out, “they’ve had the chance to be together for some time now, and they haven’t.” “So?” Alfie replies. “What does that suggest?” In a less subtle manner, I might say: “That seems to indicate that Gabriel is a bit of a player and Emily isn’t exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. But then again, we already knew that!” Alfie, however, interprets things differently and holds out hope. This misunderstanding arises because he failed to read the initial part of this summary. If he had, he would be aware that our focus here is on managing expectations.

Emily is determined to change everything about French culture she interacts with. Her current focus: making the traditional enjoyment of alcohol less popular. She wonders if a non-alcoholic Kir Royale could be an option. Sylvie remarks, “Sobriety goes against the very essence of French culture,” and Emily uses this to reveal Camille’s pregnancy yet again. Over dinner with Mindy, Emily shares her plans to abstain from dating anyone. This seems odd since she recently expressed interest in the attractive men she encounters during runs. It appears that Emily might be reconsidering her romantic prospects. One has to wonder if the writers of this show are also viewers! Mindy cautions her that refusing to date will only lead to an influx of potential suitors, likening it to a heavy rainfall of men. Unfortunately, the series lacks the charm to support such a turn of events.

The Le Monde journalist is relentlessly pursuing Sylvie, causing her to confide in Laurent about her lack of trust towards Louis. She suspects that his investment in Laurent’s yacht club aims to silence her. She informs Laurent that she doesn’t believe there’s a story for Le Monde without her participation.

In another part of the ranch, Gabriel’s hearty exclamation about the help from his MICHELIN STAR CONNECTION for his restaurant causes issues for Luc. He hopes to maintain a discreet relationship with Marianne, the distributor of these stars, but she values her anonymity greatly. One day, in broad sunlight, she is spotted in a vibrant red coat and dress. She tells him bluntly, “I can’t be seen with you anymore.” Later, at a ball, she appears wearing a mask that looks like glasses, yet fails to hide her face. Despite this, Luc invites her to move in with him. Confident in his dedication, she advises Gabriel that he requires an exceptional pastry chef if he aims to obtain the Michelin star.

The masquerade ball, interestingly enough, is also referred to as a black-and-white event. It’s puzzling how everyone seems to know the dress code without it being explicitly stated. Indeed! Emily is sporting the most enormous hat I’ve ever seen, paired with a cape adorned with an oversized “Merry Christmas From Toyota” bow. Eventually, Gabriel confirms what we all seem to have been pondering: he still harbors feelings for Emily. As a typical ‘fuckboy,’ he hasn’t devised any strategic plan regarding their relationship, such as how they might share custody or living arrangements when the baby arrives, or what kind of relationship he truly desires with Emily. You know, the usual grown-up matters, but he appears to lack the inclination and can only express that, well, he likes her. Emily suggests this scenario could only function if they were two distinct individuals.

At the Heartbreak Ball, Emily dons a bold black and white striped bodysuit, accessorized with an eye-catching ensemble. However, her hat remains a questionable choice. Interestingly, another lady from Baccarat sports the identical outfit, which I jot down in my notes as a situation that probably won’t cause any issues at all. Unfortunately, the coincidental twin outfits unfold in the most predictable fashion possible, a topic we’ll delve into later.

Alfie struts around in his dapper tuxedo – a nod to his good looks, thank you Alfie for your service! He also boasts about being an exceptional dancer, yet… one might wonder if their dance moves are as graceful as Midge and Lenny’s in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Just to clear any doubts, here comes Gabriel, masked up and sporting a tux too. In a surprising twist, he chooses the name David Guetta for his alias – quite the pop culture reference, don’t you think? As for Emily, she opts for Anna, the math teacher. Hmm, perhaps they truly do belong together!

Mindy enters, and she and Emily engage in their customary conversation – Emily’s ongoing dilemma over selecting between Gabriel and Alfie. To be honest, it appears that Emily is facing a rather inconsequential decision given her past with Alfie and her affinity for Gabriel. However, she will undoubtedly continue to ponder excessively, a habit of hers.

Sylvie receives a sneak peek at an article from Le Monde featuring Louis, where Sylvie’s image dominates and she comments on his history of offering promotions for sexual favors. Taking a brief break for a cigarette, Sylvie encounters Mindy, whom she thanks for informing Emily about the secretive JVMA closet. Mindy receives a message from Nicolas and, sensing trouble brewing, decides to leave the party to check on her boyfriend’s health. Upon arriving, as expected, Nicolas denies the allegations, labeling them as malicious lies spread by opportunistic individuals targeting his family. However, Mindy remains resolute: the story is accurate, and “sometimes our fathers may let us down.” She pledges to stand by him “as long as you’re on the side that’s correct,” which isn’t the most eloquent statement but expresses her support effectively.

Without a mask, Emily confidently approaches Gabriel for a slow dance, as if they’re the only two people in the room. Does their connection seem genuine? It sometimes appears as though clever filmmaking techniques are used to make me believe something that, quite honestly, doesn’t feel particularly authentic. My apologies!

As a long-time fan of the CW network and its shows, I have to admit that I was initially excited about this new series on Shein. However, after watching the latest episode, I can’t help but feel disappointed and even offended by its glaring similarities to “Gossip Girl.” As someone who has devoted countless hours to following the lives of the characters in that show, it feels like a slap in the face to see the same plotlines being rehashed with little effort or originality.

Moving on, let’s return to the topic of the party: Julien and Sylvie reconcile. She guarantees him that he’s part of the family and is always welcome, cautioning him about an upcoming article. Furthermore, she shares the story with Laurent, seeking his pardon. Antoine informs her that he’s aware of it, and he believes she acted correctly. Sylvie departs the party with her mask on as whispers of gossip surround her.

As I sit here watching this cinematic pairing unfold before my eyes, I can’t help but wonder – do any of you find yourselves rooting for the love story that unfolds between Gabriel and Emily? Personally, their antics leave me scratching my head and questioning whether they are truly meant to be. However, it seems that some may have developed a fondness for this peculiar duo, and are eagerly shipping them together.
