Emilio Estevez shared on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that he wrote a script for a fourth Mighty Ducks film, but Disney declined to produce it. Estevez played coach Gordon Bombay in the original 1992 sports movie and its sequels, as well as the 2021 Disney+ series “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.” However, the show experienced some production issues that led to Estevez’s departure prior to the second season, which ultimately marked its end.
As a devoted cinephile, I’m proud to confess that I penned ‘Mighty Ducks 4’. You see, after the misfortunes that struck the ‘Game Changers’ series, I felt compelled to right the wrongs and bring a fresh take on this beloved franchise.
The script is about bringing back Coach Bombay, who gets drawn in by Joshua Jackson’s character and Kenan Thompson’s character, to coach a new team for the professional women’s hockey league. This new team would be an all-female squad. The storyline finds Coach Bombay coaching roller derby when he is discovered. He insists that his girls should join him as they deserve a chance. It has a modern and appealing feel, and it reflects current society well. However, Disney decided not to pursue this idea.
The TV series ‘The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers’ ran for two seasons and 20 episodes on Disney+. In the initial season, Estevez played the role of Gordon Bombay, a secondary character. His passion for hockey was rekindled when a fresh underdog team started playing at the Ice Palace, which he owned. Later in the storyline, he took up the position of assistant coach as they competed against ‘The Ducks’.
It’s been reported that due to a conflict about ABC Signature’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate, Esteves chose not to adhere to the policy before filming Season 2 of “Game Changers.” Consequently, the studio opted against renewing his contract for the next season. In accordance with the return-to-work agreement between studios and unions, everyone in Zone A on the set of “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” was required to be vaccinated against COVID-19, which encompassed all actors and crew members who interacted with them during production.
The show ‘Game Changers’ was generally praised by critics, with Caroline Framke from EbMaster commenting that it skillfully alters the original concept while still incorporating Bombay and focusing on something other than it. This results in refreshing, contemporary revisions of a classic tale.”

“Caroline Framke from EbMaster reviewed ‘Game Changers’ positively, stating that by twisting the original premise, keeping Bombay as part of the story but not making it central, ‘The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers’ offers smart, modern spins on a timeless narrative.
