As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the selection of Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Perez” as France’s entry for the International Feature Film category at the Oscars is nothing short of electrifying. Having witnessed the evolution of French cinema from the heights of Godard to the contemporary brilliance of the Dardenne brothers, I can confidently say that Audiard has crafted a masterpiece that rivals the best of them.
France’s restructured Academy Council has chosen Jacques Audiard’s pulse-pounding redemption drama “Emilia Perez” to compete in the category of international feature films. The film collected two significant accolades at the Cannes Film Festival and garnered overwhelmingly positive criticism.
In this Spanish-language film, “Emilia Perez” features Karla Sofía Gascón portraying a formidable drug lord who confidently accepts her female identity. The movie received one of the longest standing ovations at Cannes and subsequently won the Jury Prize, with Greta Gerwig presiding over the jury. Additionally, it garnered a Best Actress Award for its talented cast consisting of Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz. Following its premiere at Cannes, Netflix acquired the rights to screen the movie in the U.S. and the U.K.
As a movie connoisseur, I can’t help but admire the esteemed French filmmaker, Jacques Audiard. His masterpiece “Dheepan” earned him the prestigious Palme d’Or, and he was also recognized with an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film for his previous work, “A Prophet.
Initially, it appeared that “Emilia Perez” would effortlessly represent France in the race, but the movie encountered tough challenges. It was among the four films nominated by France’s Oscar committee, alongside “The Count of Monte Cristo,” an epic adventure film based on Alexandre Dumas’ timeless novel, which received critical acclaim; Payal Kapadia’s light-hearted production “All We Imagine as Light”; and Alain Guiraudie’s unconventional thriller “Misericordia.” The main adversary for “Emilia Perez” was “The Count of Monte Cristo,” which has been a massive box office success in France (selling more than 8 million tickets), and has also earned critical recognition since its world premiere at Cannes outside the competition.
As a cinephile, I was thrilled to learn that the Oscar selection process this year was led by Charles Tesson, the esteemed former artistic director of Cannes’ Critics Week, alongside an impressive panel of film industry professionals. This prestigious committee featured Audrey Diwan, the acclaimed director of “Emmanuelle” and winner of Venice’s Golden Lion for “Happening” in 2021; renowned French playwright, director, and producer Florian Zeller (“The Father”); former Lionsgate boss Patrick Wachsberger; international sales veterans Carole Baraton from Charades, and Gregoire Melin from Kinology; influential French distributor Michèle Halberstadt from ARP Selection; producers Rosalie Varda (“Faces Places”) from Ciné-Tamaris, Nadim Cheikhroua (“Olfa’s Daughters”) and David Thion (“Anatomy of a Fall”) at Les Films Pelléas; and talented actress Clemence Poesy. The collective expertise and passion for cinema in this group promises an exciting and unforgettable Oscars ceremony!
Today (Sept. 18), representatives from three potential films, namely producers, sales agents, and U.S. distributors such as Samuel Goldwyn Films for “The Count of Monte Cristo”, and Janus/Sideshow for both “All We Imagine as Light” and “Misericordia”, were auditioned by the expanded committee. The committee, initially seven members strong, now includes 11 main members and five alternates following a controversy over the exclusion of “Anatomy of a Fall”. In contrast to past years, this year’s committee members will serve for a two-year term.
Although “All We Imagine as Light” didn’t secure the representation of France, its Indian co-producers have revealed to EbMaster that they have also submitted it for review by the Indian Oscar committee. Concurrently, “Emilia Perez,” will be aggressively promoted by Netflix across various categories at the Oscars (such as director, film, and actress) beyond just the international feature category.
