Elton John considers himself an early admirer of Chappell Roan. He discovered her talent prior to the release of her debut album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess,” which came out in 2023.
David Furnish, Elton John’s husband, shared with me that he was one of the earliest supporters of her talent. As a result, she has become a cherished friend to both Elton and him. He closely follows her career and admires her musical accomplishments.
John and Furnish went to see Roan perform at London’s O2 Academy Brixton in September. As Furnish mentioned, Elton had not been to Brixton since 1968 or so. It was like a spiritual journey for both of them. They were both incredibly impressed by her and her performance. This artist only has one album out, but they played every single song from the album. The audience knew all the lyrics, and she delivered an absolutely stunning performance. Her band was exceptional. She knew how to make each song resonate with the audience in a way that was electric, powerful, and incredibly entertaining.
It’s expected that the artist behind the “Pink Pony Club” hits will grace the stage at this year’s Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party, which takes place on March 2 at West Hollywood Park. Joining Elton John and his partner, David Furnish, as co-hosts for the event are Jean Smart, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Neil Patrick Harris, and David Burtka. Over the course of more than three decades, this annual event has amassed close to $115 million to support the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s mission to eliminate AIDS.
According to Furnish, serving as chair of EJAF, Chappell comprehends the mission of the foundation. She shares our values and aims. We’re all deeply invested in eradicating this crisis, and ensuring nobody is overlooked or forgotten in our efforts.
Tonight, John will begin his evening at the Oscars since he’s been nominated for the best original song “Never Too Late,” which is featured in his Disney+ documentary with the same title. He collaborated on this piece with Brandi Carlile, Bernie Taupin, and Andrew Watt. Furnish is optimistic about replicating 2020’s success when John took home his second Oscar for ” (I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from the movie “Rocketman.
It hasn’t been decided yet whether or not John will perform with Roan at the festivities. As Furnish hints, they are still discussing things and planning. However, if an award is presented to them, they plan to jump into a car immediately and head straight to their party since it’s crucial for them to be present and in the room during the event.
The foundation has raised more than $600 million since its inception in 1992.
Furnish emphasizes that our primary focus is to maintain and build upon the advancements we’ve achieved so far, ensuring we don’t lose momentum. There’s a growing concern globally, including in the U.S., about budgeting, efficiency, and whether resources are being used effectively and productively.
Furnish mentioned a joint excursion he and John undertook with Democratic and Republican legislators to Johannesburg two years ago to witness EJAF’s achievements in South Africa. He stated that they were assessing the advancements made thus far, and everyone, regardless of political affiliation, concurred that this was an outstanding investment. A significant amount of progress has been accomplished, he added. Everyone agreed that these investments, both philanthropically and for governments worldwide, are shrewd decisions.
