On her Instagram post, Ayo Edebiri disclosed she received severe threats due to Elon Musk. In February 2024, Tesla’s CEO shared a false article suggesting Disney was contemplating casting Edebiri instead of Johnny Depp in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series. Musk responded to this fabricated news with: “Disney isn’t great.
Edebiri recalled a time when she received some of the most extreme death threats and racial slurs she’s ever encountered (probably not the number one moment, but definitely top 3) due to a fictional remake of a movie she wasn’t familiar with because of Musk. He had posted it on his Instagram. This just shows that he’s not only a supporter of fascism, but also a fool. Nevertheless,” Edebiri wrote on her Instagram story.
In a recent Instagram post, Edebiri praised Bill Burr for his criticism of Musk during a recent interview on NPR’s “Fresh Air.” Burr had criticized Musk, saying that his hand gestures at Trump’s inauguration event were reminiscent of Nazi salutes. Burr went on to say that he couldn’t believe the gestures were accidental and that Musk did it twice during a presidential inauguration.
Burr labeled Musk as a “fool” with “dyed hair implants and a stiff facade,” and someone who produces a subpar car and operates an outdated social media site. The comedian questioned the liberal community: “Why are we so hesitant towards this individual who seems incapable of escaping a soggy bag?
Edebiri responded to Burr’s comments with a bullseye emoji and later criticized Musk for his racist remarks, which were based on a fabricated report about her casting in “Pirates of the Caribbean.” However, it’s important to note that she is not currently cast in any Pirates film. The future of the Disney franchise is uncertain, but last year, producer Jerry Bruckheimer announced that a reboot from “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” writer Jeff Nathanson was under development.
Bruckheimer praised Nathanson’s ‘Pirates’ reboot script to Entertainment Weekly, stating that it’s broken the code (cracked it). He particularly admires the impressive climax (third act), and they just need to polish up the beginning and middle parts before reaching that point. However, he emphasized that Nathanson wrote a fantastic third act.
A reboot might exclude Johnny Depp from making an appearance, given that his iconic character Jack Sparrow was instrumental in the first five “Pirates” films earning a staggering $4.5 billion worldwide. Since Depp has been largely out of the Hollywood scene due to legal issues and his recent high-profile libel case against Amber Heard, there’s uncertainty about his future as Jack Sparrow. Yet, Bruckheimer expresses his desire for Depp’s return to the role.
As a movie enthusiast, I’d say, “If I had my way, he’d be part of the reboot. He’s more than just a colleague to me; he’s a dear friend. His talent is unparalleled, and his artistic approach is truly one-of-a-kind.
Regarding Edebiri, the Emmy-winning “Bear” will soon grace the silver screen in the A24 horror film “Opus,” hitting theaters on March 14.
