Elon Musk launches self-driving ‘Robotaxis’ & every trip costs $4.20

Tesla has introduced its Robotaxi service, enabling passengers to journey in autonomous vehicles within designated zones. As part of the debut, the cost for rides is temporarily set at $4.20 USD.

Following Elon Musk’s hints about the upcoming Robotaxi launch earlier this month, the self-driving service offered by Tesla has officially started operating in Texas as of June 22nd. However, it remains unclear when this service might expand to other regions.

At present, our service is limited to certain locations within Austin. To become a user, you’ll require an early access pass, allowing you to be one of the initial testers for the Robotaxi App, experiencing the “autonomous ride” firsthand.

Regarding the cost, currently, the service is priced at a one-time $4.20 fee per customer. If you’re part of the early access group, you can enjoy this flat rate regardless of the duration of your journey. This has been verified by Elon Musk himself in a recent post on X.

How does a Robotaxi work?

Initially, hailing a Robotaxi seems similar to using regular Uber services. First, you’ll need to download the application and log in with your Tesla account. After setup, you can input your desired destination within the geographical region where the service is currently operational, directly on the app.

Robotaxi slows down really nice for speed bumps. Extremely smooth stops as well

From that point forward, the vehicle will collect them and allow them to secure their seatbelts or initiate the journey by pressing “Start” on the app once they’ve entered. Notably, there won’t be a driver sitting at the wheel; instead, it’ll just be an empty space.

It’s important to mention that although this service operates autonomously, it’s overseen by Tesla employees. This means there’s another staff member in the vehicle with the passenger, seated in the front, to provide assistance if needed. Just as we experienced on the first day, the AI driver isn’t infallible.

While traveling, passengers have the convenience of ending their journey early by using the “Pull Over” feature within the app. This action causes the vehicle to halt at the most suitable and secure spot nearby.

I recently took a ride in one of Tesla’s Robotaxis at night. The experience was seamless, cozy, and just as enjoyable as daytime rides.

The Robotaxi service can be accessed from 6 AM to 12 AM Central Time, as stated on their official site.

Ever since it was introduced, snippets featuring influencers utilizing this platform have been steadily filling up social media. Many have referred to their encounters as “cozy” and “fluid.
