Ellen Pompeo Breaks Down Over Awkward Grey’s Anatomy Love Scene and Fights for Equal Pay

As a fan and close friend of T.R. Knight, who I worked alongside on “Grey’s Anatomy,” one memory that doesn’t rank high among my favorite set experiences is our love scene from Season 2.

“TR and I shared a close bond on set, yet we found ourselves in an emotionally challenging situation when we had to perform a love scene,” Pompeo explained on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, reflecting back on Meredeth and Geroge O’Malley’s intimate moment in Season 2. “The scene was tense and awkward for both of us. Neither of us were eager to participate, but we had to. Filming it was quite uncomfortable. To make matters worse, the network felt there was too much movement involved.”

She explained, “Even if it were your most dreaded scenario, we had to redo that sequence… I’ve never viewed that part. I’ve never seen it. I don’t know how it was filmed, framed, or edited, but during the entire scene, I was in tears and those were genuine tears. There were numerous aspects I didn’t want to be a part of at the moment.”

(The goal here is to make the language more polite and professional while retaining the original meaning.)

In the course of the episode, Pompeo also discussed her choice to depart from the series; although she remains a secondary character and a producer on the ABC drama, she’s now focusing her efforts on her fresh project, “Good American Family,” which will premiere on Hulu on Wednesday.

Pompeo admitted he was unsure of his next step, but he felt certain he couldn’t continue with ‘Grey’s’ anymore. He likened himself to a zoo animal, feeling trapped and confined. Pompeo is a strong believer in fate, and he believed if there was something else he was supposed to do, it would eventually come to him. However, he acknowledged that he needed to move on from this.

The interview delved into numerous topics, such as Pompeo discussing her marriage, kids, and her pursuit for higher salary in the TV drama. In the year 2018, she earned the title of highest-paid actress in a TV series, receiving an impressive $20 million per season. Before that, her co-star, Patrick Dempsey, was earning more than her; however, she made a compelling case for equal pay by advocating they should both receive the same remuneration.

She pointed out that times were very different when it came to television shows, as he had already produced 13 pilots before her. She clarified that his higher quote compared to hers wasn’t a personal slight but rather a reflection of the industry, where a man could have 13 unsuccessful TV pilots and still see his quote rise. However, she acknowledged that he was indeed a more established star at the time and deserved his salary. She didn’t dispute his deserving the money, but added that since she was the namesake of the show, she too should have been paid equally, which was challenging to achieve. In simpler terms, she was saying that while times were different, she felt she should have received the same pay as him due to her role in the show.

She stated, “I wasn’t bitter about him receiving what he did. I was bitter that they didn’t appreciate me as much as they appreciated him, and they never will.”

She explained, “I wasn’t resentful because he got what he deserved. What made me resentful was the fact that they didn’t value me as highly as they valued him, and they never will.

Pompeo shared that she approached Shonda Rhimes to discuss a pay increase, not out of necessity, but rather from a place of trust in her.

Speaking about her upbringing in a mafia-like environment, she expressed a constant desire to honor those who deserved recognition. Upon being presented with data on the influence of their show, she found the courage to advocate for her wages. She declared, “I have access to the earnings ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ generates for ABC/Disney. I can see the figures. It’s my likeness, it’s my voice. For two decades, I’ve been promoting this show globally. I am the fairy godmother of that franchise for Disney.
