Elizabeth Olsen Sees Marvel as ‘Insurance’ to Make Indie Films

As a film enthusiast with years of immersion in the industry, I find Elizabeth Olsen‘s approach to her career incredibly inspiring. Unlike many actors who might see big-budget blockbusters as a means to fund their passion projects, Olsen sees them as interconnected parts of her journey. Her dedication to character-driven roles and her unwavering support for independent films is truly commendable.

When Elizabeth Olsen isn’t portraying Wanda Maximoff (also known as the Scarlet Witch) in a Marvel film or show, it’s likely you’ll catch her in a smaller, more personal indie production instead. However, contrary to what some might think, she’s not only accepting those Marvel roles for the sake of funding her passion projects. She made this clear during the Vulture Festival.

Olsen shared that she didn’t subscribe to the mindset of ‘one for me, one for them.’ Instead, Marvel has provided a stable platform that offers a sense of security in her life, allowing her the liberty to pursue other opportunities. As such, she hasn’t felt compelled to commit to projects under the pretense of ‘I’ll do this to do that.’ In fact, returning to Marvel for projects like the Disney+ series Wandavision has always been a deliberate choice for her. She emphasized that these opportunities are always based on character-driven ideas, not just randomly inserting her into a project.

And Olsen understands that the movie industry requires both kinds of films. She confessed that she wouldn’t be inclined to create a film if it was only going to stream online – which is why she was thrilled that her Netflix movie “His Three Daughters” didn’t just have a theater release, but also screened on 35-millimeter film. However, Olsen noted that Marvel productions can help “cover the rent” for theaters so they can exhibit smaller movies, echoing director Paul Thomas Anderson’s thoughts. “I believe that’s the balance,” Olsen stated.

Despite being a prominent figure in major films, the challenge of securing another project remains real. Olsen also discussed her role in Todd Solondz’s upcoming film titled “Love Child”, which is currently in need of funding. She expressed that she has never worked harder for a movie facing such difficulties, stating, “I haven’t been a producer on it, but I’ve never hustled more for a movie that’s having trouble getting made.” During the panel, she appealed to journalists, asking them to publicize her appeal: “If you could kindly make a big, clear announcement saying, ‘Todd Solondz needs financial support to create a film’, it would be greatly appreciated.” We’re here to help in any way we can.
