Elizabeth Olsen Says Marvel Movies Are ‘Not Really the Art I Consume’: ‘I’m Still Trying to Prove’ That ‘When I Meet People, Especially If It’s a Work Meeting’

More recently, Elizabeth Olsen spoke on the “Wild Card with Rachel Martin” podcast from NPR and expressed that she’s working to demonstrate to others that her individual preferences don’t consistently match up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Olsen expressed that she often struggles to select projects at work that align with her personal preferences, which she feels she needs to demonstrate when meeting new people. This is particularly true during professional discussions about film and literature, so she believes she’s yet to fully establish herself in this aspect.

Olsen explained, “After spending so many years working on Marvel projects, I feel that any other jobs I take on should align with my personal preferences since, even though I am grateful to be a part of this universe and proud of what I’ve accomplished with the character, it isn’t the kind of art I usually enjoy consuming. I’ve always been open about this.

Elsa Olsen first appeared as Scarlet Witch in the end credits scene of the 2014 film “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, later taking on a more significant supporting role in the 2015 movie “Avengers: Age of Ultron”. Since then, she has been featured in blockbuster films such as “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”. She also starred in the Disney+ series “WandaVision”, which earned her an Emmy nomination.

Olsen expressed that he found the Marvel stories remarkably reminiscent of Greek epics, beautifully depicting politics and culture. This initial fascination led him to feel honored to join the franchise. However, in the past decade, there’s been a shift in perception about working on Marvel films. Nowadays, an actor might face criticism if they express interest or disinterest in being part of a Marvel movie.

Last year at Vulture Festival, Olsen expressed gratitude towards Marvel for providing a “steady presence” in her life that has offered her a sense of “security” allowing her to pursue other opportunities. She mentioned that she’s consistently chosen to return to Marvel because it feels like a genuine choice. Every time, it’s been about the character and the storyline, not just having her character included. In her words, “It’s never felt like they were forcing me into something.
