Elio is a fresh science fiction film from Pixar, subtly hinting at their upcoming project titled Hoppers.
This summer, Pixar is delving back into the realm of science fiction, having previously found triumph in an action-packed sci-fi adventure with Wall-E, by introducing a narrative centered around a young protagonist instead of a robot.
Title Character Elio’s longing for something more leads him to feel isolated and miserable on Earth. His wildest aspirations become reality when extraterrestrial beings seize him and transport him into the cosmos.
In the narrative, they transport Elio to a cosmic entity known as the Communiverse, an organization that spans across various celestial bodies. Throughout this tale, keen observers may recognize a character from the studio’s forthcoming film.
Elio features a Hoppers reference

At a recent Elio presentation in London, Mary Alice Drumm (the producer) disclosed that the movie will incorporate several subtle hints, one of which is a tribute to the studio’s upcoming release in 2026.
Dr. Drumm mentioned that the lizard in the film is a reference (or hidden tribute) to Hopper’s,” he added, “And we can expect another original movie release in the upcoming Spring season.
If you haven’t encountered Hoppers before, here’s how Pixar describes the movie based on its official synopsis: “Suppose you could communicate with animals and comprehend their speech. In Disney and Pixar’s new feature film, Hoppers, researchers have figured out a way to transfer human consciousness into lifelike robotic animals, enabling people to talk to animals just like they are animals themselves! This adventure follows Mabel, an animal enthusiast who takes the chance to use this technology, uncovering secrets in the animal world that she never dreamed of.

In addition, there’s a hint about the studio itself incorporated into what Elio sketches in the sand. Drumm points out that the layout when Elio reclines on the beach closely resembles an approximation of the Pixar campus, complete with its amphitheater.
When asked to choose her preferred Easter egg, Drumm opted for one that referenced two directors of Elio’s, namely Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian.
In the process of creating a film, Drumm pointed out, things become quite hectic as time becomes incredibly valuable. As a result, you’re constantly asking people to do tasks and following up on their progress through channels like Slack, where you monitor the work of multiple directors closely.
Initially, there were repeated questions about the whereabouts of Domee and Maddy. Later, these questions transformed into queries about ‘Domad’. The radio at the start, which might not have been visible to all, is actually known as a ‘Domad’ radio.
On June 20, 2025, the movie “Elio” is set to premiere globally, and if you’re curious about which two of Pixar’s films they plan to remake, you can check it out right here.
