As an avid fan, I must admit that while Battlefield 2042 has shown signs of improvement since its launch, it’s undeniable that the series, which once reigned supreme in the shooter market, finds itself in a challenging position now. Electronic Arts is open about their high expectations for the next chapter of this iconic series, tentatively named Battlefield 6 or Project Glacier. They’re pinning a lot on this game to restore the series to its former grandeur.
According to a comprehensive report from Ars Technica, as reported by InsiderGaming, insiders at EA suggest that Battlefield 6 could see significant success upon its release, which is projected to be before April 2026. The company’s leadership believes the game has the potential to draw in over 100 million players, with a large portion expected to be attracted by the free battle royale mode.
Despite appearing quite challenging and doubtful, this goal seems to be within reach but still somewhat improbable. To give you an idea, Battlefield 2042 managed to attract approximately 22 million players, whereas the most successful game in the series’ history – Battlefield 1 – according to an EA employee, could have sold as many as 30 million copies. However, since 2002, by 2022, all games in the series collectively have reached sales of around 100 million copies.
The report highlights that while some individuals within EA and its subsidiary DICE hold the view that achieving the target of 100 million users is feasible, it’s important to note that this perspective is relatively uncommon, as suggested by an anonymous source speaking to Ars Technica.
As a gamer, I can confidently say that, based on all the data from market research and the quality of our deliverables, it’s highly unlikely that we’d even come close to achieving that level of success.
As I eagerly dive into this gaming project, there’s a sense of uncertainty lingering. But let me assure you, progress is being made at a steady pace. Recent updates suggest that the upcoming game will feature the much-loved Rush mode, a nod to our veteran gamers who have been with us since the beginning. However, it seems not all smooth sailing; some team members are taking extended breaks due to fatigue, and it’s looking like we might be investing over 400 million dollars into this game by 2023. It’s an ambitious project, no doubt!
Will the grandeur and aspirations of Battlefield 6 be sufficient to rekindle the franchise’s past prestige? It remains to be seen in the coming year. One thing is certain: Electronic Arts can’t afford a misstep.
