In China, an elderly gentleman, aged 62, residing independently, has unexpectedly gained widespread attention online, as locals have been surreptitiously documenting his daily routines – reminiscent of the plot from the movie “The Truman Show.
Feng Dianwu, fondly referred to by locals as ‘Little Brother Min,’ has recently gained fame on Chinese social media platforms; however, he remains unaware of his status as an internet sensation.
An older gentleman resides independently in a dilapidated house, situated in the northern Chinese city of Cangzhou, and he experiences cognitive impairments.
As a devoted fan, I’d like to share an intriguing piece of Dianwu’s backstory. Reports suggest that, during his youth, he endured injuries to his vocal cords and brain while heroically shielding a friend. These wounds have left him with cognitive delays. Since the tragic passing of both his parents, Dianwu has resided alone in his home. To survive, he scavenges for food and supplies from other residents.

The tale of Dianwu sparked intrigue among internet users in China following the sharing of a video that depicted him harvesting cabbages under the cover of darkness in his village, which was initially uploaded to the web by a fellow resident of Cangzhou in 2022.
Following the spread of the video, people from the community started capturing and sharing clips of the elderly man on social platforms. It wasn’t long before documenting his daily routines turned into a popular trend.
By the year 2025, cameras are positioned throughout Dianwu’s household, capturing moments of his routine activities such as tending to his chickens, unwinding, and shopping at nearby shops, which also feature cameras for surveillance purposes.
As per Chinese accounts, the income generated from the viral videos and live streams related to Dianwu is channeled directly towards bettering the life of the elderly man. This includes enhancing his living conditions.
Ever since Dianwu became a viral sensation, villagers have been treating him to club nights, spa treatments, and other activities. However, while his heartwarming content has attracted a large following, many online users are worried about him being constantly filmed without his awareness.
After increasing public uproar about Dianwu’s continuous monitoring, it appears that accounts sharing content related to Dianwu have disappeared. Locals also allege that he was relocated from his residence by family members and is now living with them since March 2025; however, this assertion remains unverified.
It’s not just Dianwu who has been continuously live-streamed for others’ amusement; back in 1998, a Japanese comedian found himself in a similar situation. He was selected to participate in a variety game show, where he lived in a confined apartment and was constantly filmed. His only source of sustenance came from winnings from magazine sweepstakes.
The documentary currently focusing on him is called ‘The Contestant,’ and it chronicles a year-long odyssey that shares some resemblance with The Truman Show.
