Despite numerous trailers and articles about it, if you didn’t participate in the ‘network test’ open beta event in January, you might find it challenging to define precisely what Elden Ring’s upcoming co-op spinoff Nightreign truly represents. Is it a supercharged boss rush, a peculiar Fortnite-like live service game, or an official modification for Elden Ring’s smooth co-op play? The truth lies somewhere else, and the latest trailer aims to clarify some of these misconceptions and provide insights into what players can expect through a ten-minute narration that is both informative and reminiscent of a calming infomercial.
In the video provided, FromSoftware dissects the game’s architecture, detailing aspects such as the dynamic world map, time-limited stages, overviews of six out of eight initial character classes, and a glimpse into the progression choices accessible during multiple playthroughs.
Although I unfortunately didn’t get to play the network test personally, I enjoyed watching my friends stream it and can’t wait to try it myself. I’ve reserved one of two characters – either the Guardian (the classic shield-wielding protector class) or the Duchess (a high-risk, high-reward character with a Bloodborne-inspired aesthetic). However, I’m leaning more towards the Guardian due to the Solaire alternate skin featured in the trailer.
In this trailer, there’s something fresh – the introduction of individual missions for each playable character. Interacting with specific Non-Player Characters (NPCs) within the Roundtable Hold (your base between battles) will unveil additional objectives in the field, enhancing the rich history and backstory of each hero. Although gameplay may still primarily revolve around collecting loot, defeating monsters, and fast-paced combat, it’s satisfying to notice a narrative thread woven into these elements.
The finale of the trailer focuses on formidable Nightlord adversaries you’ll encounter during day three in each session. Although a few, like the ominous cosmic skull-bug Astel who has previously wreaked havoc in Elden Ring, may seem familiar, there are also some intriguing newcomers. Among them is a towering goat-man shaman with an overabundance of large, round goat eyes that leaves me uneasy, but I’m particularly eager to engage the one-armed centaur warlord who resembles Ludwig from Bloodborne in combat style.
Elden Ring Nightreign launches at the end of the month—May 29th—with pre-orders open now on Steam. There’s a £35/$40 regular edition and a £48/$55 deluxe version, which doubles as a preorder on some DLC coming further down the line, including “additional playable characters and bosses”, hinting at a planned season pass kinda situation.
