Elden Ring Nightreign Review: The Multiplayer Souls Game You Didn’t Know You Needed

It’s not typically what one might expect FromSoftware to create following Elden Ring’s success, but the Japanese studio often defies expectations. While the concept of blending a battle royale-style game with a multiplayer focus may seem contradictory, Elden Ring Nightreign manages to pull it off effectively, especially if you approach it with an open mind. In truth, this unusual blend has resulted in some of the most innovative and enjoyable multiplayer experiences I’ve encountered in recent times.

From descending onto this vast playground via an aerial dropdown, I’ve found myself immersed in a multiplayer environment that carries many familiar elements. The game predominantly supports trios, as we scavenge for loot (either hidden chests or remnants of formidable foes that bestow us with weapons or permanent enhancements) and strategize our approach for the mission ahead. Each playthrough offers unique paths to victory, but ultimately, it’s about evolving my character progressively (by utilizing runes and grace sites, similar to the main game) in preparation for the boss battle that typically unfolds on the third day of gameplay (roughly around the half-hour mark).

I found this game to be an intriguing mix of different genres, and it took some time for me to fully adapt to its unique style. The biggest challenge was learning to go with the flow instead of sticking to a predetermined strategy like I do in Souls games. At first, it was disconcerting to have to rely on chance loot drops and adapt to the circumstances. But once I accepted that I wouldn’t always be able to play my ideal way, I began to appreciate the game’s unpredictability and experimented with weapons and abilities I wouldn’t normally use in my character build. In a sense, the game’s roguelike mechanics pushed me out of my comfort zone, and now I approach these games with a more open mindset for future playthroughs.

As a gamer, let me share my experience with you. Though this game primarily caters to multiplayer, I’ve managed to enjoy it even solo and offline. However, I must admit that I’m not the most seasoned Soulsborne player (I’ve only earned a Platinum trophy in Elden Ring). Yet, I find the multiplayer mode to be my preferred playstyle because the enemies are incredibly aggressive, and having others distract them is quite beneficial. The cooperative aspect seems crucial now more than ever.

There have been discussions about potential balancing updates aimed at making solo play more viable in the future. Maybe it’s already feasible for players who outclass me, but I’ve only experienced success (and a lot of fun) when playing with a group of three.

In its finest moments, Elden Ring Nightreign can evoke an overwhelming sense of epicness. As you progress through a good run, what starts as routine gradually morphs into something remarkable. Encountering raid bosses for the first time and observing your comrades devise a well-coordinated strategy instead of blindly attacking the same enemies is an exciting experience. Moments like witnessing a teammate perform a crucial revive at the brink of defeat or landing a decisive blow on a boss that alters the course of battle are exhilarating, and it’s even more impressive when you become the dependable member your team can count on.

The game offers opportunities for epic scenes, particularly the confrontations against the Night Lords, marking the end of each playthrough – assuming you reach that point. These battles are some of the toughest and most satisfying encounters in a Souls series game, making your team feel triumphant when victorious. Initially, you’ll likely experience defeat more frequently than success, which can be disheartening (especially because you can’t immediately reattempt a boss fight as in the main games). However, every session provides an opportunity to learn enemy patterns and acquire permanent items that will assist future playthroughs, ensuring that no time spent is entirely fruitless.

Elden Ring Nightreign Review: Final Verdict

Elden Ring: Nightreign is an innovative endeavor by FromSoftware, seamlessly blending their renowned Souls series gameplay with a multiplayer run-style experience. Although you can play alone and offline, the game truly shines when played with others. If you choose to go it alone, you might be left feeling unsatisfied. But for those willing to embrace the transformation, they’ll discover unique and unforgettable gaming experiences. It may not have been the game I expected, but I’m grateful FromSoft took a risk and delivered something fresh. Venture into this adventure with some trustworthy companions, and you won’t be disappointed – it’s one of the finest cooperative PS5 games out there if you’ve got a reliable team on board.
