Elden Ring Nightreign has an ultra-rare item with a 0.035% chance to drop and players are convinced it’s the key to the game’s biggest secret

Players of Dark Souls spent several months pondering if the pendant that comes with your initial inventory had a hidden secret. Despite it being labeled as “useless,” many believed there must be more to it due to FromSoftware’s reputation for embedding secrets within their games. In the end, it was just a joke, but given the intrigue surrounding the studio’s games, it’s understandable that people were curious about this pendant.

Given the news that Elden Ring Nightreign might contain an extremely uncommon item which unlocks a hidden door, I find myself leaning towards the perspective that we haven’t entirely deciphered all its secrets just yet.

The item known as the Cord End rarely appears in one of the churches scattered across the map in this game. After more than 60 hours of playtime, I haven’t come across it once, and neither have any players I’ve ever grouped with. YouTube content creator Hawkshaw estimates its drop rate to be approximately 0.035%, or roughly seven times in every 20,000 attempts. Given such rarity, some theories about this item might be challenging to verify without modifying the game itself.

As far as we’re aware, this object serves only one purpose: Beneath the castle at the center of Nightreign’s map lies a door to a cave that remains sealed unless you have the Cord End in your possession. Inside, there are three Sacrificial Twig items which allow you to retain your runes when you perish – a detail hinted at in the Cord End’s description regarding the young girls. However, the scarcity of the item seems disproportionate to the relatively average reward it offers, as similar advantages can be discovered during a run elsewhere.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but ponder if this newfound item is just the first piece of a larger puzzle hidden within the game. All we’ve got to guide us is a hint in its description about the “cutting-skilled tribe” that also crops up in the Roundtable Hold’s crypts. There are two enigmatic messages down there, one saying, “Branch power to those who roam and wander,” which makes some think we need to find a specific place to use the Sacrificial Twigs during our journey. Others suspect there might be a way to utilize the Cord End in the game’s final stages. The catch is that this item is so scarce, no one has been able to crack the code yet, hence the mystery remains unsolved for now.

Data snoopers such as YouTuber Zullie the Witch are already combing through Nightreign’s files. A part of me wonders if we would have been informed by one of them if there were clues suggesting a larger secret than just a cave containing three partially useful items. The Cord End could potentially be Nightreign’s pendant, but it’s exciting to think that there might still be something undiscovered, and that we could stumble upon the treasure with any lucky search.
