The popular video game Elden Ring, developed by FromSoftware, is being transformed into a movie, with renowned screenwriter and director Alex Garland at the helm for the film adaptation.
On May 22, 2025, Bandai Namco revealed their collaboration with A24 to adapt Elden Ring into a unique medium – a live-action film. Renowned director Alex Garland, known for his work on the 28 Days franchise, Ex Machina, Annihilation, and most recently Civil War, will pen and direct this project.
Contrarily, A24 has transformed into a cinematic titan, delivering unique movies that have both critical acclaim and box office success. Notable films from their recent lineup include Moonlight, Uncut Gems, First Reformed, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Hereditary, Talk to Me, and numerous others.
As a gaming enthusiast diving into the Elden Ring universe, I’m captivated by the multitude of tales waiting to unfold. From delving into Marika’s reign before the Shattering to uncovering the intricate backstory of the Gloam-Eyed Queen – both possibilities promise a treasure trove of unexplored lore. Regardless of the direction, it’s an enticing journey that lies ahead.
FromSoftware’s game Elden Ring has been exceptionally popular, earning multiple Game of the Year awards including being named Shacknews’ Game of the Year 2022. Additionally, it triumphed in several other categories that year. The game has since seen a successful expansion titled Shadow of the Erdtree and is also set to release a spin-off called Elden Ring Nightreign.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m not usually blown away by movie adaptations of my favorite video games. However, Nintendo’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie was an exceptional exception that exceeded expectations and redefined what a game-to-film translation could achieve. Now, I can’t wait to see if Alex Garland, A24, Bandai Namco, and FromSoftware will pull off another hit with the Elden Ring movie, raising the bar even higher for video game adaptations.
