As A24 officially greenlights the Elden Ring movie, enthusiasts such as myself who have immersed themselves in the Lands Between for countless hours find ourselves caught between excitement and apprehension about the cinematic portrayal of this beloved story and world. On one side, I am thrilled at the prospect of witnessing the enigmatic and ethereal Elden Ring universe unfold on the big screen and enjoying a cherished intellectual property in an innovative manner. However, I can’t help but remember the disappointing outcome of the Borderlands film as a cautionary tale about potential pitfalls.
Creating a film based on Elden Ring promises to be intricate, with its success heavily reliant upon the unique narrative crafted by director Alex Garland (known for works like Ex Machina, Civil War, etc.). The lore of Elden Ring is profound and complex, yet intentionally veiled and abstract, making it difficult to pinpoint an appropriate starting point for the story. Furthermore, the Lands Between are expansive and sprawling, which poses a significant challenge in accurately portraying the grandeur of this setting on screen. Although I’m hopeful and keep my fingers crossed, there are numerous potential pitfalls along the way.
Elden Ring’s Story & Characters Won’t Translate Easily To Film
How Do You Tell The Story Of The Tarnished?
What I’m most intrigued and apprehensive about is if the movie will endeavor to narrate the “primary” narrative of Elden Ring, that is, the story of the Tarnished reestablishing order in the fractured world by vanquishing Demigods, gathering Great Runes, etc. Although it’s practical for a game to have a series of bosses to hunt down and follow a route to the Erdtree, I’m not convinced that a film focusing on the Tarnished from one major boss to another would be particularly fulfilling.
Beyond the game itself, the history of the Shattering and the individual backstories of each Demigod, as well as their connections, are not extensively explained unless one delves deeper. The storyline in Elden Ring is intentionally minimalistic, featuring little dialogue with primary characters and few cutscenes that often leave more questions unanswered than answers provided.
In the potential Elden Ring movie, will secondary characters like Blaidd, Fia, Renna, Alexander the Warrior Jar, and even the Dung Eater play significant roles? Given that the story takes place in the Elden Ring universe, it might be best to center the narrative around a single character’s journey for maximum audience engagement. While the overarching narrative of Elden Ring is captivating, it may not hold the same level of interest for a film audience as a traditional hero’s tale does.
The Scale Of Elden Ring’s Lands Between Will Be Difficult To Capture
The Lands Between Stretch From Caelid To The Mountaintops Of The Giants & Beyond
In addition to accurately portraying the main plot for the movie, representing the vastness of the setting is likely to be quite difficult due to its immense size and expansive nature, extending from Caelid to the lakes of Liurnia, the Deeproot Depths, and beyond. I’m eager to witness numerous locations being brought to life on screen, but I have concerns that viewers may not fully capture the same sense of amazement and awe as players when they first explore areas like the Mountaintops of the Giants or engage in battles near Redmane Castle.
The movie boasts an array of breathtaking locations, yet it’s impossible to include them all. While it’s likely we’ll visit Limgrave and the Roundtable Hold, it seems less probable that we’ll explore places like the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds. To truly convey the vastness of the Lands Between is crucial for capturing the spirit of the game. If the movie falls short in this regard, it would be a disappointment to fans.
Director Alex Garland Is A Strong Choice For An Elden Ring Film, But It’s A Daunting Task
A Great Director Doesn’t Guarantee A Great Video Game Adaptation
The news that A24 has selected Alex Garland as director for the Elden Ring movie is intriguing, and opinions among fans are largely split. One positive aspect is that Garland has openly admitted to playing Elden Ring himself, something essential for directors handling video game adaptations. Notably, he’s currently on New Game+6, demonstrating his deep-rooted passion for the IP, a trait that could significantly contribute to the project.
To elaborate, Garland’s previous filmography, which includes movies like Ex Machina, Civil War, Annihilation, 28 Days Later, and Dredd, demonstrates his capacity to handle large-scale projects. Nevertheless, it’s important to note that video game adaptations have a history of being unpredictable, often falling short more frequently than they succeed. Films like Borderlands, Monster Hunter, Uncharted, among others, have faced both critical and commercial disappointments in the past.
If a movie based on a well-known and loved intellectual property (IP) is perceived as merely a money-grabbing venture, where the director or studio doesn’t seem to value the fanbase, it might not be well received. For Alex Garland to ensure the film adaptation thrives, he must ensure the game’s essence is faithfully represented, demonstrating through his work that he shares the same passion for the world of Elden Ring as its devoted fans do.
Fans Are Both Hopeful & Skeptical About An Elden Ring Movie
A Portion Of The Fanbase Doesn’t Actually Care About The Story At All
Generally speaking, the fanbase for the Elden Ring movie is divided due to the belief that there are more chances for things to go wrong than right. Despite my personal hope for its success, I acknowledge the challenges it faces. Additionally, a segment of fans aren’t fascinated by the intricate lore of Elden Ring, nor are they invested in the game’s narrative. In fact, many players of Elden Ring are primarily captivated by aspects like character customization, combat mechanics, and exploration rather than the main storyline. These elements tend to be what keep them engaged.
By the close of the day, I find myself in a state of ambivalence regarding the proposed Elden Ring movie. On one hand, I’m eagerly anticipating it could rank among the finest video game adaptations ever gracing our cinemas. On the other, there’s apprehension that it might mirror the fate of Borderlands and disappoint us all. The prospect of seeing the Elden Ring universe unfold in live-action is thrilling, yet concerns linger about whether the magic of the Lands Between will translate to the screen with the same captivating allure. Despite my misgivings, I’m choosing to stay optimistic and eagerly await further updates as they trickle out over the ensuing months.
