I wouldn’t have imagined it, but lo and behold, Elden Ring is on its way to the big screen, and I can hardly contain my enthusiasm!
If you’re unfamiliar, Elden Ring is widely considered one of the greatest video games ever made by many gaming critics, including myself who thoroughly enjoyed playing it. Despite knowing that its story was compelling enough for a movie adaptation, I wasn’t sure if anyone in the film industry would be brave enough to tackle such a highly acclaimed game.
But, my prayers have been answered, because Elden Ring is coming to Hollywood. Here is what we know
What Is The Elden Ring Release Date?
As for Elden Ring, there’s still no confirmed release date set in stone as of May 2025. Given that Deadline only recently reported news about the film adaptation this month, it would be quite unexpected if we already had a release date or if it were part of our 2025 movie lineup.
Frankly, there’s an overwhelming number of highly anticipated movies scheduled for release over the next few years that make me secretly wish Elden Ring wouldn’t come out until at least 2028. From the upcoming Marvel films to the new Avatar: Ash and Fire series, the sheer volume of major motion pictures on the horizon feels like it could potentially overshadow a game of Elden Ring’s caliber. I just hope that it gets its chance to make an impact when it eventually releases, without having to compete against another big release on the same weekend.
Alex Garland Will Direct

Because the movie has only recently been revealed, as of now, there isn’t a confirmed cast in place. It’s unlikely we’ll receive updates on this matter anytime soon. However, according to a Deadline article, Alex Garland will be the director for the upcoming film.
You read that correctly – Alex Garland.
It’s likely that you recognize the name as he has been associated with some of the most renowned films from the past decade or so, including “Civil War,” a war thriller by A24, the sci-fi film “Ex Machina,” and the critically acclaimed “Annihilation.” His latest work, “Warfare,” was released in 2025. Apart from directing these films, he also wrote and produced “Devs,” an outstanding miniseries that showcased Nick Offerman’s best performance. If his name is new to you, this selection is still a great choice!
Among current-day directors, Garland is likely one of the top choices for bringing the intricate, expansive, and fantastical story of Elden Ring to life. Given his knack for crafting unique, mind-bending plots on screen, he appears to be the ideal fit to translate this epic tale into a film. Needless to say, I’m eagerly anticipating the results.
The Story Was Created By George R.R. Martin

As a passionate moviegoer, I can’t reveal who’s penning the script for the upcoming film, but let me tell you this much – the game’s captivating narrative was masterfully crafted by none other than the renowned George R.R. Martin, a name that rings familiar to many of us.
Indeed, the creator of the “Game of Thrones” universe, who continues to work on the sixth and seventh novels currently, is also responsible for penning the captivating tale in the Elden Ring game.
May the individual tasked with transforming this story into reality find success, for not only is Martin renowned for crafting one of the greatest fantasy series ever, but his new game promises to be equally captivating. I eagerly anticipate the unveiling of its brilliance to the world.
What Is Elden Ring About?
To clarify, despite my enthusiastic discussion about Elden Ring’s overall quality and the brilliance of its creators, I’d like to shed some light on the movie’s plot. Essentially, it will be based on the video game, offering a cinematic interpretation of the captivating world within Elden Ring.
In a dark fantasy setting, the video game unfolds as an action role-playing game set within an open world. Here, a nameless adventurer embarks on a journey through diverse dungeons and faces formidable adversaries, including tough bosses. The objective is to gather fragments of a shattered deity to ascend as the new Elden Lord.
Experiencing this game has been a genuinely immersive journey for me. Given that its creators are the masterminds behind the Dark Souls series, I was well aware that it wouldn’t be an easy ride. The narrative is captivating and introduces some of the most chilling and eerie creatures one could possibly encounter.
Elden Ring Will Be Live-Action

An intriguing piece of information from Deadline suggests that the forthcoming Elden Ring will be a live-action adaptation, and I must admit this doesn’t come as a shock to me. In fact, when speculating about the success of video game adaptations, it seems that the first question on everyone’s mind is whether it will be live-action. Although the lack of animation in this case doesn’t particularly worry me.
The narrative seems to be well-suited for a live-action adaptation filled with sword fights, magic, and other elements. With adequate time, the visual effects could rival those seen in the Lord of the Rings films. I’m confident that with the right studio involved, we could indeed see this come to life.
A24 Is Creating The Film

The point I’d like to emphasize is that the movie comes from A24, which is why I’m so optimistic about it.
Over the last ten years or so, A24 has gained recognition through its productions. Starting from modest origins, many of its recent films have captured global attention, elevating A24 to become widely recognized in everyday households.
This studio has created a fantastic array of films, ranging from Ari Aster’s chilling horror masterpieces such as “Midsommar” and “Hereditary,” to the critically acclaimed “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once,” which won an Academy Award, and numerous other remarkable productions. Interestingly, the director of the latest film has also collaborated with this studio on multiple occasions, including the talented Damien Chazelle.
I am absolutely confident about this film version, which only heightens my anticipation. With a creative mind like Jordan Peele leading the way, backed by the prestigious studio A24 and a story concept from George R. R. Martin, it’s hard for me to imagine anything other than success. Admittedly, I’ve been wrong in the past, but I have a strong sense that this time will be different.
I’m eagerly anticipating the release of Elden Ring, and I can’t wait to learn more about it. If there isn’t any new info coming soon, I might find myself revisiting the game.
