Hello partner, what’s keeping you busy on TikTok these days? For his upcoming film titled “Eddington“, director Ari Aster (known for “Midsommar” and “Hereditary“) is joining forces with A24 again. This time, they’re creating a contemporary western movie. Similar to his work on “Beau Is Afraid“, Aster is both writing the script and directing it, along with co-producing with Lars Knudsen. The renowned cinematographer Darius Khondji will be in charge of photography, replacing Pawel Pogorzelski who has been involved in all of Aster’s previous projects. The film boasts a star-studded cast, an ominous atmosphere, and it’s set amidst COVID lockdowns – adding to the already tense feel of Aster’s movies. Below you can find the latest updates on “Eddington“.

Pedro Pascal and Joaquin Phoenix are portraying characters who seem to be rivals in the small town of Eddington, as suggested by their quote “This town isn’t big enough for both of us.” In the recently released trailer on June 10th, Pascal plays the mayor running for reelection amidst a COVID-19 lockdown, while Phoenix portrays his opponent, the sheriff. The trailer heavily emphasizes the role of the internet, with a livestream capturing a shooting and Emma Stone’s character only appearing on a phone screen. During his campaign, Phoenix promises to “reclaim our town” and “save our souls.” Interestingly enough, movies are usually meant to provide an escape from reality.
What’s Eddington about?
In May 2020, the story Eddington focuses on the heated mayoral contest between Ted Garcia (Pascal) and Joe Cross (Phoenix). The election becomes so contentious that it triggers a town-wide conflict. This tension is further heightened by the characters’ diverse encounters with online culture, ranging from Black Lives Matter advocates to conspiracy theorists.
Who’s in the cast?
Beyond Pascal and Phoenix, the ensemble features Emma Stone portraying Louise Cross, a character who is Phoenix’s vulnerable wife. Deirdre O’Connell takes on the role of her mother, who is entangled in conspiracies. Austin Butler steps into the shoes of Vernon, an influencer peddling rumors about a pedophile ring, whom Louise becomes infatuated with. Luke Grimes plays Phoenix’s deputy, Luke, who exhibits growing racist tendencies during BLM protests and suspects a Black colleague, portrayed by Micheal Ward. The cast also includes Amélie Hoeferle as Sarah, Clifton Collins Jr. as Lodge, and William Belleau as Officer Jiminez Butterfly.
When is it coming out?
At the Cannes Film Festival on May 16, Eddington was first shown. In her review from the festival, Alison Willmore of Vulture commented that Eddington is “unusually sharp” in its depiction of intricate culture-war details, but she admitted, “Honestly, I’m not sure I’d go so far as to say I enjoyed it.” For those who can’t wait, Eddington will be widely released on July 18, 2020.
