In the series 9-1-1, Eddie’s (Ryan Guzman) move back to Los Angeles seems exciting, but it isn’t necessarily what his character requires. Throughout season 8, we watched as Eddie grappled with the challenge of living without his son under the same roof. Eventually, the strain became too much, and he made the difficult choice to relocate closer to Christopher (Gavin McHugh) for the sake of their relationship. While this move isolated Eddie from the rest of the 9-1-1 season 8 cast, it was a necessary step given the circumstances, as it allowed him to maintain a connection with his son.
In the final episode of the 8th season of 9-1-1, prior to departing for Texas, Eddie assisted his former squad during a building collapse, evoking a feeling that the team had reunited following Bobby’s demise. This moment made Eddie reconsider his decision to leave LA, choosing instead to stay. Despite my wish this entire season, I can’t help but feel that Eddie didn’t seem to have learned from his past mistakes. Once again, there was no dialogue with his son, placing him in the same predicament as at the start of the season.
Eddie Wanted To Be A Better Father, But Left Chris Out Of The Conversation
The 118 Is Family, But So Is Christopher
It took Eddie some time to realize that the distance from him to his son wasn’t benefiting them as initially intended. Consequently, he chose to depart from the 118 and Buck, a difficult decision indeed. He felt compelled to nurture the relationship before it slipped away permanently. Although Eddie’s intentions were admirable, he didn’t take the time to ask Christopher if that was what he truly desired. For the most part, Chris avoided talking to his father when he called or kept their conversations brief during the season. Chris required time and distance to heal, yet he wasn’t granted that space.
To perk up Buck, Eddie arranged for Christopher to pay a visit, which eventually led to both of them staying in Los Angeles. This was another situation where Christopher wasn’t given a say in the matter. Eddie did this to give himself and Buck the sense that things were returning to normal, despite the fact that he didn’t seem content in Texas either. However, it’s important to discuss these matters beforehand. Eddie felt at home with the 118, so they ended up there instead. If Eddie doesn’t communicate about these issues with Christopher, nothing will change between them.
Eddie’s Personal Growth Has Been Slow, But It Feels Like He Hasn’t Even Been Given A Chance
Being Back In LA Means Eddie Will Be Back To His Old Ways
It was heart-wrenching to see Eddie part from his firefighter family, but what follows now is even more painful – watching him seemingly undo the strides he’s made this season. His separation provided a unique opportunity for him to reconnect with his son without work interfering, especially with Buck. Yet, his swift return to the 118 makes it seem as though the time spent apart was insignificant. This season, Eddie and Christopher’s bond was central to his narrative, and its resolution feels rushed and incomplete. The harm he inflicted on their relationship warranted more than a simple off-screen discussion about moving back.
In the ninth season of 9-1-1, it would be heartening to witness Eddie making progress in mending his bond with his son and learning how to communicate more openly with him genuinely. Despite the abrupt ending of season 8, this development could offer some closure regarding the efforts Eddie has been putting in. Regrettably, it appears that this scenario is unlikely to materialize. Given his extended absence, it seems more probable that Eddie will focus on rebuilding the strained connection with Buck, as they both grapple with life without Bobby. It feels like Eddie’s character development might not progress much in this upcoming season.
