As a long-time aficionado of both Eddie Murphy and George Clinton‘s extraordinary talents, I can hardly contain my excitement about this upcoming biopic! With Eddie Murphy taking on the role of George Clinton, under the guidance of Bill Condon who previously worked wonders with Murphy in “Dreamgirls,” it’s a match made in musical heaven.
Eddie Murphy is about to tear the roof off the sucker.
As a movie connoisseur, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll soon be witnessing a captivating portrayal of George Clinton, the visionary leader of Parliament-Funkadelic, in an as-yet-unnamed biopic. This masterpiece is being directed by the talented Bill Condon and produced by Amazon MGM Studios. The script, currently being crafted by Virgil Williams from an original draft by Max Werner, promises a compelling narrative. This project was sparked by Catherine Davis, a devoted George Clinton fan, who brilliantly pitched the idea to Murphy.
Previously, Condon had been the director under whom Murphy acted in the 2006 movie “Dreamgirls.” This film brought Murphy a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and also a victory at the Golden Globes in the same category.
The movie will be manufactured by Murphy through Eddie Murphy Productions, John Davis via Davis Entertainment, and Catherine Davis and Greg Yolen. Additionally, Charisse Hewitt-Webster from Eddie Murphy Productions, along with George Clinton, Archie Ivy, and Jeff Jampol are serving as executive producers for the project.
According to George Clinton’s memoir “Brothas Be, Yo Like George, Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard On You?”, the movie tells an untold narrative about George Clinton, a groundbreaking figure in funk music, and his challenging path to establishing the musical collective Parliament-Funkadelic. Renowned for their bizarre sci-fi concepts, eccentric soundscapes, and mind-bending performances, Clinton and his band’s unconventional journey reshaped both music and culture.
Earlier, Murphy had been associated with Amazon MGM Studios for projects like “Candy Cane Lane” and “Coming 2 America”, where he not only produced but also acted. His upcoming role will be in “The Pickup” at the studio, alongside Keke Palmer and Pete Davidson.
Condon is currently in post-production on “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” a feature adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical, starring Jennifer Lopez and Diego Luna. Condon also wrote and directed “Kinsey,” “Gods and Monsters” (for which he received the Academy Award for best adapted screenplay), and penned the screenplay for the 2002 musical film “Chicago.”
Williams received an Academy Award nomination for writing the screenplay of “Mudbound”, and more recently, he collaborated with director Malcolm Washington in adapting August Wilson’s work, “The Piano Lesson”.
Condon is represented by WME, Anonymous Content, and lawyer Wayne Alexander from Alexander, Lawrence, Frumes & Labowitz. On the other hand, Williams is represented by CAA, manager Craig Brody from Map Point, as well as attorneys John Meigs and Mahdi Salehi of Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Rush, Kaller, Gellman, Meigs & Fox, LLP.
Deadline was first to report the news.
