ECAM Forum, Madrid Audiovisual Cluster Launch FINDE For Spanish Indies to Mind the Financing Gap

The Co-Production Market of the ECAM Forum in Madrid is set to welcome FINDE, a fresh financing initiative for independent cinema, on June 12th. This program aims to unite Spain’s independent film sector with the private investment community.

Led by Spain’s renowned film school and cultural organization ECAM and the Madrid Audiovisual Cluster, this industry day aims to connect previously segregated areas, eliminate obstacles, and clarify essential ideas about private financing in cinema production, as stated by the collaborators.

During an intense day, over a hundred attendees with ECAM Forum accreditation will take part in practical sessions about equity and private investment in film, networking opportunities with investors, and presentations of international funds. Additionally, there will be round-table discussions involving prominent figures from both the public and private sectors, as well as independent producers from companies like Tornasol, Elastica, BTeam, El Deseo, Beta Fiction, Morena Films, and Avalon.

At the event, a number of prominent global professionals are present, including Rémi Burah, director general of ARTE/Cofinova, Giorgos Karnavas, CEO of Heretic – a leading production and distribution company involved in the upcoming film “The Birthday Party,” which stars Willem Dafoe and is being co-produced with Spain, the Netherlands, and the U.K. – and Alexandra Lebret, a partner at Axio Capital and former head of the European Producers Club.

Lebret will be presenting the newly established €58 million ($66 million) Together Fund to Spanish producers. This fund is marketed as the first European equity fund dedicated to financing small and medium-sized independent scripted content producers, with the European Investment Fund having already pledged €25 million ($28.5 million).

Regarding the fresh indie film funding discussions at ECAM Forum, Avalon CEO Stefan Schmitz expressed his opinion that it’s beneficial to involve more private capital in the [audio-visual] industry. He’s eagerly looking forward to observing the impact on FINDE.

Alba Wystraëte, the head of ECAM, expressed her excitement about partnering with the Madrid Audiovisual Cluster. This partnership aims to explore and endorse recent trends and financing methods in our field, and to provide a pathway for independent and rising cinematic talents to tap into these new financing approaches,” said Alba Wystraëte.

Teresa Azcona, leader of the Madrid Audiovisual Cluster, who collaborated with ECAM Forum and producer Sophie Erbs on creating FINDE, commented: “This event will help us advance our goal of enhancing access to funding within the audiovisual sector, benefiting both companies and projects. By doing so, we can fortify our vibrant ecosystem and work towards making Madrid a leading hub for financing in the audiovisual industry.

Based on data from the Madrid Audiovisual Cluster, which is supported by both the City Council and the Community of Madrid, it’s estimated that the audiovisual industry contributes approximately 2.6% to the economy of Madrid in terms of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
