Ebenezer Scrooge Is Robert Eggers’s Next Monster

Robert Eggers crafts his career around portraying authentic scenarios that would be dreadful to experience: being pursued by a witch (or is it vvitch?) in colonial America, surviving isolation with only a fellow worker and aggressive seagulls for companionship at a lighthouse, seeking retribution for one’s deceased father across a desolate and harsh Scandinavian terrain, and most recently, being deceived by a vampire into relinquishing one’s lustful spouse. While Eggers doesn’t limit himself to monster movies, monsters are a defining characteristic of his work. He aims to present evil in its most concrete form. This may be why Eggers’ forthcoming monster, said to be none other than Ebenezer Scrooge, seems fitting. There have been numerous adaptations of the Christmas-averse boss who learns a life-changing lesson from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, featuring characters ranging from the Muppets to animated ducks to actors in community theater. It is the tale of a miserly, selfish man who despises Christmas so much that ghosts must visit him on Christmas Eve to guide him towards kindness. Willem Dafoe, who has partnered with Eggers on his last three films, is rumored to be taking on the role of Scrooge; however, he could play just as intimidating a character as any one of the ghosts.

Since working on Nosferatu, Eggers has taken part in three new projects; this year he hinted at a movie called Werwulf, and reports also suggest that he’s joining the sequel to Labyrinth. His enthusiasm for exploring monstrous and mythical realms with a touch of gritty authenticity makes his work more intriguing than truly terrifying (although it certainly has its scary moments). A Christmas Carol is almost like folklore, much like the Salem witch trials or Dracula. Eggers shines when he brings a fresh perspective to established tales. Until now, A Christmas Carol has been primarily for children, but with Eggers’s spooky touch, we might soon see the Ghost of Christmas Future as Bill Skarsgård, adorned with warts and scars.
