Since 2018’s Monster Hunter: World, the series has seen an expansion of its narrative elements. Among these advancements, Monster Hunter Rise (or Wilds) stands out significantly in terms of its storyline. In this installment, each new monster is introduced via a tutorial mission with NPC companions joining the hunt. This may not appeal to long-time players accustomed to a more independent gameplay experience, but fans of a more engaging narrative may find it commendable.

In a somewhat lesser league compared to RPG genre heavyweights, but undeniably impressive nonetheless, is the tale of Monster Hunter Wilds. Regardless of personal preferences among fans, there’s always an abundance of monster-slaying action to get those adrenaline levels soaring – just steer clear of the NPC characters and their stories. Here are some of the top side missions to embark on early, including traditional side quests as well as optional hunts.

7. Side Mssions

Tutorials Disguised As Basic Fetch Quests

In the realm of this game I’m immersed in, there are additional adventures known as side missions or quests. They often revolve around simple tasks like fetching items, which can feel rather basic in Role-Playing Games (RPGs). At the outset, a couple of these tasks are grouped together. For instance, Kanya, a character nestled within the Scarlet Forest’s base camp, will impart the skill of fishing to newcomers like me. Similarly, Dareel, situated in the Windward Plains’ base camp, will show us how to use the net. These missions are beneficial if you’re new to this series as they teach essential mechanics, but the rewards are so modest it’s almost a joke. To add to that, in Monster Hunter Wilds, you can catch fish with the net, making the fishing rod somewhat superfluous in most situations.

6. Beware The Chatacabra

A Repeat Of The First Mission

In the main mission, known as Slimy Situation, Chatacabra will be the first colossal creature players encounter for hunting. It’s considered one of the simpler monsters to farm and not particularly large; it’s just a big frog. Despite its size, it can yield substantial rewards for players if they repeatedly harvest it. The optimal method for farming Chatacabra post-initial assignment is through an optional quest titled Beware the Chatacabra.

Players have the option of creating the ideal labeled Chatacabra Armor by utilizing its components. If they decide to do so, they can camouflage themselves among the froggy villain during a battle. As long as players are able to avoid getting hit by their tongues, this fight should be straightforward, even with just a Palico accompanying them.

5. Fire Starter

In simpler terms, after finishing the main quest “Hot on Their Tails,” players embark on a quest to track down the Quematrice. This is a large bird with an affinity for fire, capable of igniting flames by puffing out its tail feathers. Initially, it may prove challenging, but subsequent encounters will become progressively easier. Players who consistently hunt this bird can obtain superior armor and a powerful bow named the Quematrice Arco 1. This armor set can be accessorized with a hat that gives players the appearance of either a Red Mage from Final Fantasy or one of the Three Musketeers.

4. Tussle in Pink

In one of the game’s most unruly creatures, you’ll encounter the Congalala. Known for its flatulent attacks that can inflict an unusual status effect in RPGs called Stench, the Congalala is a holdover from an earlier installment, Monster Hunter 2. Delving into its past isn’t necessary right now; you’ll cross paths with this towering ape during the main story mission Drive off the Congalala. If you wish to battle it again, you can do so in the Optional Quest titled Tussle in Pink. The armor set and weapons may seem a bit absurd due to Gemma, the blacksmith, favoring an abundance of pink in the gear. Despite their quirky appearance, completing this side quest is still advisable.

3. Every Rose…

Along Came A Spider

Location: Scarlet Forest

In the world of Rose and Thorn, pursuing the Lala Barina is like chasing every rose. This giant spider, disguised as a blooming rose, is beautiful yet treacherous; its beauty hides the fact that it can launch paralyzing buds to halt hunters in their tracks. However, this trait makes it easier for players to land critical hits in the rose-like region. For those who prefer female characters in action RPGs, they can craft an unusual yet effective dress from the Lala Barina’s parts. Despite its odd combination with other armor pieces, it remains a solid gear set overall.

2. Buggin’ In The Scarlet Forest

A Surprisingly Worthwhile Small Creature

Monster: Vespoid
Location: Scarlet Forest

In simpler terms, the Vespoid is often referred to as a small, formidable creature in this game, and typically, smaller foes don’t yield many armor sets. For instance, there’s an Optional Quest named “The Desert’s Challenge,” which primarily revolves around a group of raptor-like creatures known as Talioths. These creatures can contribute to the crafting of gauntlets, but that’s about it.

Instead of vespoids, these creatures come equipped with a complete suit of armor consisting of all five pieces. This Vespoid armor set is quite good and offers some useful additional skills. For instance, Survival Expert allows players to recover more health using insects found in the surroundings such as the Vigorwasp. Additionally, Paralysis Resistance reduces the length of time a player is paralyzed, which can occur while battling creatures like Lala Barina. Hence, it’s advisable not to dismiss Buggin’ so quickly when exploring the Scarlet Forest.

Make Your Own Side Quest

In Monster Hunter Wilds, adventures aren’t special quests that you can initiate through the menu with friends. Instead, they are a broader category within the game. If you need assistance, you can summon friend support using SOS Flares. You’re free to explore the world whenever you like without worrying about death or time constraints. During these expeditions, you can gather herbs for potions, minerals for various weapon and armor sets, and even confront big monsters at will. However, keep in mind that these monsters might flee, leaving the area empty, unlike dedicated missions. Therefore, it’s suggested to focus on gathering materials during these expeditions, particularly when exploring new areas such as the Windward Plains, Scarlet Forest, and beyond.
