Eagle Vision returns in AC: Shadows, but with some caveats

In the world of Assassin’s Creed games for quite some time now, the eagle-eye view or Eagle Vision has been a defining feature, ranging from observing the surroundings from a lofty vantage point to soaring with an actual eagle. Exciting news for fans! Eagle Vision is back in Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, but there are some conditions attached. Specifically, you won’t be piloting a real eagle this time around, only the human characters. However, what really sets it apart is that only one of the two protagonists in Assassin’s Creed: Shadows can utilize this ability.

Eagle Vision returns in Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, but no eagle this time

As Noae, you’ll swiftly gain the Eagle Vision skill due to it being part of the tutorial. However, Yasuke won’t be able to acquire this ability. This might be related to his lack of climbing skills, but it also seems fitting for his character. Unlike Yasuke, who is a formidable and intimidating close-combat fighter, Noae is more focused on stealthy exploration. This is another limitation for Yasuke, as he can’t climb, and he isn’t playable until much later in the game than Noae.

In this game, what does Eagle Vision do exactly? Even if you’re not familiar with it from playing the Assassin’s Creed series, here’s a brief explanation. When you activate Eagle Vision, specific objects and characters will be marked for your convenience. White denotes neutral items, safe hiding spots, or areas for quick observation. Blue signifies the main objective of the mission, which could be key objects or crucial opponents that need to be defeated to complete a quest. Yellow indicates materials useful for expanding your hideout, as well as boxes containing other valuable items and some keys. Lastly, red means danger. If an NPC marked in red spots you, they will initiate a fight.

During gameplay on PS5, you can trigger this specific view at any moment by pressing R3. However, Observation works slightly differently. Locations that enable Observation are signified with a bird symbol and often are strategically placed high vantage points in the game world, like rooftops or tall buildings. Once you ascend to these spots, you’ll have the ability to scan distant areas, revealing crucial points such as mission targets, additional observation locations, and hidden areas.

In Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, the inclusion of Eagle Vision feels essential, enhancing the overall experience. It’s gratifying to see it return in the latest installment of the series. While it suits Yasuke’s gameplay style to be without it, it subtly suggests that Naoe might be the main character, with Yasuke serving as a backup when stealth becomes tiresome.
