According to Circana, EA Sports College Football 25 was the most popular sports game in the U.S., and it looks like its parent company might revive their college basketball version, which hasn’t been active for over a decade. In a recent statement from The Athletic, EA Sports’ senior vice president Daryl Holt hinted that they are considering college basketball (along with other sports), but emphasized that American football remains their primary focus.
Holt stated that there was a strong demand, interest, or enthusiasm within our community towards college football. As developers, we are constantly brainstorming ways to expand our reach into various sports, including niche ones or those without regular games. Currently, my primary focus lies in American football. However, we’re always thinking about new possibilities and wondering what other opportunities may be out there for us in the realm of sports development.
In 2009, the latest NCAA basketball game published by EA Sports, titled NCAA Basketball 10, was released, featuring Blake Griffin – who has since retired and won the dunk contest – as the cover athlete. Although details about a new college basketball game are still in the early stages, it’s anticipated that EA would strive to secure as many student-athletes as possible through Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) contracts. Last year, over 11,000 Division I football players opted into the NIL deal for CFB 25, receiving $600 and a copy of the game in exchange for their NIL rights. As of now, negotiations for the NIL deal for CFB 26 are ongoing, with EA choosing to remain silent on the matter. Interestingly, the College Football (CFB) series was inactive for over a decade until its revival last year, which rejuvenated its popularity, with the last release taking place in 2012.
This year’s sequel, CFB 26, is set to unveil fresh features, with potential enhancements to the single-player career mode, Road to Glory, being one of them. Notably, CFB 25, which was released in 2024, ranked as the second highest-selling game in the US, trailing just behind Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
