As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve witnessed the evolution of game development from rudimentary pixelated graphics to the breathtakingly realistic worlds we see today. Andrew Wilson’s latest emphasis on Electronic Arts’ use of AI in game creation is intriguing, but as a cynical old-timer, I find it hard to believe that they have already achieved the level he claims.
For some time now, Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts, has been stressing the importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their game development. A recent example of this was during a presentation to investors where he declared that generative AI forms a key component of EA’s overall business strategy.
Cardboard creativity
In this instance, they went beyond mere verbal descriptions. They demonstrated a potential approach to implementation through visual means. In the video, the gamer showcased their creativity by designing a game level solely using commands and then defining the rules for a multiplayer match in an analogous manner.
As a gamer, I must admit that the presentation didn’t live up to my expectations, and it seems like many others felt the same way, judging by the comments on Geoff Keighley’s shared video. First off, it was just a pre-recorded video, which makes me wonder if Electronic Arts doesn’t have a working version of that technology ready for public demonstration yet.
Unusual use of NPCs from games
Electronic Arts intends to push the boundaries of AI in gaming by expanding character interactions beyond the game world. They aim to have NPCs (Non-Player Characters) accompany us in real life, offering assistance with tasks like shopping or standing in for us during video calls with family when technical issues arise, which might seem a bit unusual.

Absolutely, the reality is that AI is indeed employed in game development by EA. Previously, FIFA 23 showcased around 12 animation cycles governing player movements on the field (each cycle comprises a series of poses that together form a specific movement). In EA Sports FC 24, however, we’re looking at up to 1,200 such animations, each one created through AI.
The company’s demonstration indicates that it may take some time before AI is utilized by EA game players for content creation. However, Wilson’s assertion about AI being a significant part of the company might be overstated at this point.
