Trip Hawkins, the founder of Electronic Arts (EA), has expressed his thoughts on the upcoming film about football commentator John Madden, whose name graces EA’s famous football game series. Hawkins played a significant part in securing Madden himself for what later turned into one of EA’s longest-running and financially successful game franchises. In this movie adaptation, the character of Hawkins will be portrayed by comedian and actor John Mulaney.
According to Hawkins’ statement to VentureBeat, the movie turned out to be quite an unexpected situation since, following a meeting with director David O. Russell, he believed he could offer valuable perspective on the plot – however, it seems that the filmmakers had no interest in involving him further.
Hawkins expressed, “Perhaps I could assist with the accurate portrayal of history. However, they showed no desire for my involvement whatsoever.
Approximately a year has passed since Hawkins met Russell, and there was some doubt whether the Madden movie would proceed. However, with recent news of the movie’s revival, featuring Mulaney portraying Hawkins and Nicolas Cage as Madden himself, Hawkins thinks the filmmakers have secured funding and gathered enough momentum to produce the film. Nevertheless, Hawkins expressed that he’s not particularly enthusiastic about it.
He remarked, “Becoming a subject of a film where a well-known actor portrays me isn’t something I imagined as a child. ‘I want to grow up and have a movie made about me,’ wasn’t a dream I had back then.
Hawkins expressed his admiration for the earlier film by Russell, specifically Silver Linings Playbook. He found it to be deeply relatable and impactful, as well as humorously entertaining.
However, Hawkins said he believes Mulaney will play Hawkins in the Madden movie as “comic relief.”
He seems to think that the actor portraying his character in the movie is a comedian. It’s likely that this character will serve as the jester in the plot, adding humor to the story.
According to reports, Kathryn Hahn is slated to take on the role of Madden’s wife, Virginia. Meanwhile, Sienna Miller is in negotiations for portraying Carol, the late Raiders owner Al Davis’ wife. Christian Bale has been confirmed to play Davis himself.
Filming for the Madden film is anticipated to start in Atlanta come May; no launch date has been disclosed yet.
John Madden served as the head coach for the Raiders from 1969 to 1978, during this period he earned seven division titles and a Super Bowl victory. After retiring from coaching, Madden gained fame as an NFL broadcaster, and also played a significant role in creating the popular Madden NFL video game series, which persisted long after his passing in 2021.
Regarding the Madden video game franchise, it appears that a new installment is scheduled for release in August. At this point, specific details are scarce; however, it seems there may be some sort of Lowe’s branding incorporated within the game.
