EA Cancels Hotly-Anticipated ‘Black Panther’ Video Game

The planned Black Panther video game has been scrapped following the shutdown of Cliffhanger Games, as reported. Electronic Arts terminated the development of the highly anticipated Black Panher game that was to be created by Cliffhanger Studios.

With the announcement that several employees were terminated, it’s important to note that the actual number was less than the 300 who were let go last month following the cancellation of the latest Titanfall game. In an email sent on Wednesday, May 28th, EA Entertainment president Laura Miele clarified these actions as part of a strategy to “hone our focus and channel our creative resources towards the greatest potential growth areas.

Miele commented, “These choices are challenging since they impact individuals we’ve collaborated with, grown alongside, and created meaningful memories with. We’re making every effort to assist them by exploring potential positions within EA, where we’ve had success in helping people transition into new roles.” This is the third wave of layoffs at EA in 2025, affecting numerous ex-employees. Developers Respawn stated that these reductions significantly affected the teams working on Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi.

The upcoming project was being developed at a time when Cliffhanger Games, a freshly established AAA studio, was primarily populated by seasoned industry veterans who had previously contributed to hit games like Call of Duty, God of War, and Halo Infinite. This studio was spearheaded by Kevin Stephens, formerly the vice president of Monolith Productions, renowned for the Middle-earth series. Notably, Stephens has a history of involvement in titles ranging from 1997’s Claw to F.E.A.R. and the popular Condemned series.

The announcement that ‘Black Panther’ is being scrapped leaves both comic book and video game enthusiasts disheartened, as it implies the cancellation of the planned solo ‘Wonder Woman’ game as well. However, supporters of the Marvel Comics character can look forward to playing as at least one incarnation of Black Panther in the future.

The game will empower players to command four diverse characters: Steve Rogers (Captain America), T’Challa (the Black Panther), Nanali (leader of Wakanda’s Spy Network), and Gabriel Jones (Howling Commando member). This game is being created by Skydance New Media, with Plaion handling the publishing.
