Dynasty Warriors meets Braveheart in new indie rogue-lite

Yesterday’s Triple-i showcase showcased numerous fantastic indie games. Among them, Katana ZERO continues to receive DLC, Into the Fire involves saving people from a volcano, while The Alters challenges you to manage a space station crew of alternate versions of yourself. It’s an exciting period for indie game enthusiasts. One brief trailer, shown early in the presentation, offered a fresh glimpse at one of my highly-anticipated games: Tears of Metal, a cooperative hack and slash rogue-lite action game that takes place in Scotland.

A rogue-lite Braveheart-themed Dynasty Warriors with a dark fantasy twist

The Triple-i event, organized by prominent independent game developers like those behind Slay the Spire, Vampire Survivors, and Risk of Rain 2 (and others), is an annual exhibition dedicated solely to indie games. This special event does not feature hosts, commercial breaks, or any other types of interruptions between the game trailers. Yesterday, the game Tears of Metal unveiled a fresh trailer and announced that players can participate in an open beta on Steam until April 17th.

As a dedicated admirer, I’d describe my experience with Tears of Metal as an invigorating blend of the spirited Scottish rogue-lite style and the epic combat of Dynasty Warriors. However, it presents a significantly greater test of skill. Instead of mindlessly mashing buttons, you’ll send entire swarms of adversaries flying with strategic precision. You’ll need to make astute decisions about which units to take along for support, master the game mechanics, and brace yourself for tough boss battles. Neglecting common foes or failing to use your block will quickly lead to defeat. To add a layer of excitement, Tears of Metal offers co-op mode, allowing a few friends to join in, each bringing their own army. This not only amplifies the fun but also increases the game’s challenge level accordingly.

In a rogue-lite game like this one, you’ll be carving out your own path through the countryside, deciding among different locations as you progress while enhancing your combat skills along the way. The core concept of “Tears of Metal” revolves around an enigmatic stone that has fallen from the heavens, which could explain its name. Intruders are threatening to invade your territories in search of this peculiar and potent substance. Of course, you won’t stand idly by and let them get their hands on it!

In the world filled with enigmatic stones, semi-human crowds, and colossal adversaries, it’s no wonder that “Tears of Metal” infuses a dark fantasy touch into what could have been a straightforward Braveheart simulator. The fundamentals of combat are crucial, but as you advance, you’ll discover numerous enhancements to aid in defeating your foes. For instance, one enhancement I encountered unleashes a fiery blast each time I execute a specific sequence of melee attacks. As of now, “Tears of Metal” doesn’t have a confirmed release date, but it’s anticipated to debut sometime this year. You can register for the open beta and include the game on your wishlist on Steam.
