Dying for Sex Recap: Samantha Was Wrong

In the late ’90s, “Sex and the City” was widely praised for initiating discussions about sex and pleasure, but it didn’t fully encompass all possible sexual encounters. The main quartet primarily engaged in conventional heterosexual intercourse, with Carrie seldom venturing beyond a limited number of positions on a comfortable bed. However, the concept of discussing sex openly was the foundation for broader conversations to come.

In a shift from the narrow depiction of sexuality portrayed by Samantha, Miranda, Carrie, and Charlotte in their series, modern shows like “Orange Is the New Black”, “Girls”, and “Sex Education” have broadened the representation of female sexuality to offer numerous possibilities. It’s essential to remember that there isn’t a single way to be aroused, and no method is ‘incorrect’ as long as all participants consent. As “Dying for Sex” delves deeper into Molly’s personal exploration of her sexuality, it’s worth noting that the show has yet to present conventional penetrative sex scenes. While a character has expressed a preference for traditional intercourse at one point, the show instead introduces various avenues of pleasure for Molly, expanding our understanding of intimacy and desire.

In episodes titled “Amplified Emotions” and “Mastering Intimacy,” Molly discovers that assertiveness stimulates her sexually. Initially, she experiences an awkward sexual encounter with a young man (Marcello Hernández) who incessantly queries about her preferences. It’s refreshing to see young men inquiring about their partners’ desires, but not everyone is well-versed! Experiment, buddy! You have consent here. Unfortunately, the man also seems unsure of what he wants. He merely repeats the word “clasp” until it loses meaning. Molly is unable to decipher if he wishes her to hold his testicles gently or manipulate them in some other way. Completely disenchanted, she asks him to leave.

During this period, Molly is experimenting with new medications that lead to vaginal dryness. This issue results in an amusing sight: a large lubricant pump from Costco showing up on her bed during a difficult moment. She’s also participating in various cancer support groups. Initially, she joins the group for stage-four patients, but later decides to move to a group where optimism prevails. To do this, she deceives them by claiming to have curable cancer. However, her deception is soon discovered, and it’s heartbreaking to witness her being removed from the group, as the leader bluntly explains, “what you are experiencing is their deepest fear.

Molly consistently strives to exude happiness and brightness, but finds herself constantly attending numerous medical consultations. Nikki stands resolutely by her side, which ultimately leads to her losing her acting job. To shield Molly from additional stress, Nikki chooses not to reveal this temporary setback. Nikki’s life is on the edge of disarray, yet she maintains that it’s all worthwhile as she doesn’t want to harbor any regrets in the future. Despite taking on every responsibility — including observing that Molly’s gait is affected when her hip is close to breaking — Nikki remains uncertain about her caregiving abilities.

Molly appreciates Nikki’s assistance during her cancer battle, as managing her medical care is equivalent to having a second job. Unexpected romantic encounters like the one with Rob Delaney, nicknamed “Neighbor Guy,” are intriguing. One day, he unexpectedly shows up in her elevator, munching on a burrito while Molly and another man head up to her apartment. After sending the man away, she finds herself getting intimate and notices her neighbor doing the same through the wall. The thought of him being aroused by hearing her moans excites her, leading to what she calls a “mistake orgasm” when she later tells Nikki. When Nikki inquires about the experience, Molly humorously imagines it as “a complete symphony orchestra within my pants.

It’s inevitable that neighbors will interact, and Molly often encounters a particular individual. One day, she finds him carelessly disposing of his waste in the hallway, prompting her to instruct him to clean it up. Following this incident, they both retreat to their respective apartments only to engage in solitary activities. When he asks for permission to visit, she refuses. In a later altercation, Molly vents her frustration by dumping his odorous trash bag on his doorstep and barges into his apartment, demanding he perform in front of her. He obliges, and the spectacle of the petite Molly commanding this large, hairy man is quite a sight. She expresses a desire to kick him, which excites him, leading him to beg for it. In an attempt to do so, she kicks with all her might, but something breaks. As Molly undergoes a sexual awakening, she suddenly collapses in pain on the floor. Despite her spiritual growth, her body is showing signs of deterioration.

(I tried to maintain the same tone and intensity while making it slightly more formal and using less explicit language)

As Molly is recuperating in the hospital, she shares with Nikki and Sonya her incredible tale of what happened when her femur broke. Impressively, it’s an unbelievable story. Sonya comforts her by explaining that sex isn’t merely what Samantha shared on Sex and the City all those years ago. Rather, she encourages Molly to consider sex as a “wave” or a “mentality.” I find this perspective truly enlightening. I adore Sonya. Everyone deserves to have someone like Sonya in their lives.

During episodes three and four, Molly’s hips heal. Following her interaction with her neighbor, she recognizes her inclination towards dominance. She then strives to apply these insights in her daily routine. Seeking potential partners online, she discovers an amiable finance broker (Zack Robidas) who is intrigued by penis humiliation and cock cages. In a comical turn of events, this man possesses the most attractive penis Molly has ever witnessed. Despite her attempts to mock it, she encounters some difficulties. Later, she confides in Nikki about the cock cage and the “unicorn dick,” mentioning that she had to squeeze it in like she was stuffing a sweat sock into a ball. This series excels at inducing chuckles based on sexual themes. Sexual humor doesn’t have to be grave!

The title “Dying for Sex” doesn’t necessarily elevate the act of sex itself. Instead, the show presents sexual experiences, whether solo or with others, as a form of communication between bodies and minds. When Nikki and Molly attend a “kink-focused, play-party potluck” that carries an unusual mix of vaginal odor and oregano, the main intention is to let Molly observe a public BDSM encounter. A man named G (Robby Hoffman) instructs a woman to a table for self-pleasure. He meticulously guides her actions, saying “Don’t climax until I tell you so.” Molly watches, clearly captivated. Yet, is she truly yearning for this?

Molly visits G at work, where G advises her that she must first assume a more submissive role before contemplating taking on the dominant position in a sexual scenario, which they refer to as “topping.” As predicted by G, when Molly engages with a financial broker later, she finds herself hurling insults at him while stomping on his chest in high heels. However, these insults soon turn self-directed. She screams, “I hate you!” just as the broker vanishes. Instead of seeing the broker disappear, Molly sees herself lying on the floor with her mastectomy scars, and then her 7-year-old self. The broker calls out their safe word, “Red! Red!”, bringing Molly back from her self-loathing trance. Unfazed, the broker mentions that dominance can be intimidating, and then he departs for the kitchen with his partner to grab a snack.

Molly comes to understand that G was correct in their earlier discussions, and she decides to return to the home-goods store where G works for a conversation. In the back room, G guides Molly through an educational and sensitive experience. G exhibits compassion, understanding, and assertiveness. Recognizing that Molly has experienced some form of trauma, G approaches the situation with extreme care, ensuring explicit consent at every turn. G also emphasizes Molly’s control in the encounter, empowering her to express her desires. These considerations are crucial for anyone dealing with past sexual traumas. Eventually, G asks Molly what she would like him to do, but this time Molly has clear expectations.

In this particular scene, Molly requests a few items, and G responds with great care and affection. A unique moment occurs when she gently blows on Molly’s hip scar. While no conventional sexual acts take place, the scene is intensely intimate and electrifying – the most captivating we’ve witnessed so far on the series. Hoffman masterfully portrays this scene, demonstrating both command and tender affection.

The themes that unfold throughout this exchange – consistent consent, staying mindful, and recognizing the power of expressing desires during intimacy – are crucial life lessons that should be taught in every sex education class. In an ideal world, these concepts would form key chapters in a comprehensive sex-ed book: one that focuses on the importance of clear communication, mutual respect, and understanding each other’s needs and boundaries. I sincerely hope that the writers for Dying for Sex will consider incorporating these valuable lessons into their future episodes.

Following her visit with G, Molly has a meeting scheduled with Doctor Jerry (Dr. P). She requests him to take a seat beside her on the examination table, instructs him to synchronize his breathing with hers, and proceeds to express her preferences for the remainder of her treatment plan. The kind-hearted Dr. Jerry obliges to all her wishes and departs the room with a smile. While Dr. Jerry is commendable, this scenario underscores the fact that the American healthcare system is geared towards swift encounters that may not prioritize or cater to patients’ needs. This setup can potentially distress individuals grappling with serious health issues and even re-traumatize those who have experienced a sense of loss in their personal autonomy. Molly asserting her desires and requirements during this interaction is a significant stride forward.

A significant development unfolds as Nikki chooses to forgive the doctor who dismissed Molly’s chest lump years ago, unaware it was a sign of breast cancer. Previously in the episode, we learn that Molly’s initial gynecologist had advised her not to worry about a chest lump, only for it to return and be diagnosed as cancer a decade later. This negligent act by the doctor cost Molly the chance for early treatment and potentially saving her life. However, Nikki extends forgiveness. Moreover, we discover that Nikki lost her job a month ago, yet it becomes evident that she is prioritizing Molly’s well-being above all else. At one point, Nikki assures her sister that she will stand by her side, no matter the circumstances.

In my perspective as a movie critic, I must say that the latest development in the series finds Molly and Nikki stepping back from their volatile relationship, which finally paves the way for Molly to delve deeper into her connection with Neighbor Guy. Their brief encounter in the elevator leaves him expressing his recurring thoughts about their shared moment, while she stands firm, reclaiming her power as the movie ends. The question remains: why didn’t these two captivating characters find each other earlier? Nonetheless, I eagerly await to uncover the exciting adventures that await them now that they have found common ground once more.
