As a seasoned moviegoer with decades of cinematic adventures under my belt, I must admit that the international box office debut of “Red One” left me feeling a tad underwhelmed. With a hefty budget and a star-studded cast, I expected fireworks, not just a modest $26.6 million haul from 75 markets. But let’s face it, even Santa can’t save every movie!
Titled “Red One,” this Christmas-themed movie featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Santa’s head of security didn’t rake in a massive foreign box office opening. Over the weekend, it grossed $26.6 million from 25,195 screens in 75 international markets.
Compared to “Venom: The Last Dance”, the film brought in an additional $33 million from 66 foreign markets during the same three-day period, and this was during its third weekend in theaters. In total, it has earned $279.4 million overseas and $394.2 million worldwide. While “Venom 3” has managed to keep audiences interested even beyond its opening weekend, its earnings are trailing behind those of its predecessors, such as the 2018 original “Venom” ($642 million internationally and $856 million globally) and the 2021 release “Let There Be Carnage” ($293 million internationally and $506 million worldwide). However, since it was produced with a budget of only $120 million – a relatively modest amount for a comic book adaptation – “The Last Dance” should perform well during its theatrical run.
Title “Red One” debuts on November 15th at the domestic box office, with estimates suggesting it could earn between $20 million and $40 million. Produced by Warner Bros. internationally and Amazon MGM in North America, this film comes with a hefty production cost of approximately $250 million. Given its high price tag, it needs to have an extended run in theaters to compensate for that expense – not including global promotional efforts. However, Amazon MGM values box office earnings beyond just financial returns. They view theater releases as a means to attract top talent and create excitement for their streaming service, Prime Video.
Initially, “Red One” had a robust start in the UK, landing in the second spot with a gross of $3.2 million from 902 theaters. Its opening weekends also saw impressive figures in Mexico ($2.3 million), China ($2 million, albeit a softer start), and Spain ($1.5 million). Critical reception for “Red One” has been somewhat divided. The plot thickens as Santa Claus (J.K. Simmons) is abducted, sparking a rescue operation headed by a gruff security personnel from the North Pole (Johnson) and an unintentional bounty hunter (Chris Evans). Jake Kasdan, director of “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” helmed this film.
Globally, “The Wild Robot” from Universal and DreamWorks Animation is almost reaching the $300 million milestone in global ticket sales. So far, it has earned approximately $292.4 million worldwide, with $161.5 million of that coming from foreign box offices.
