As a lifelong musical theater enthusiast who has spent countless hours belting out tunes in the comfort of my own home, I wholeheartedly agree with Dwayne Johnson‘s sentiments. The joy and immersion that comes from singing along to a movie musical is unparalleled.
In “Moana 2,” Dwayne Johnson, a top-tier actor and producer, is encouraging viewers to feel free to join in with songs if they wish. He’s reprising his voice role as the demigod Maui in Disney’s upcoming animated musical sequel, hitting theaters on November 27th. The release of “Wicked” ignited discussions about whether or not it’s acceptable for moviegoers to belt out tunes during a musical flick. Some cinemas even requested that their patrons not sing along during “Wicked,” such as in the case of certain theaters.
However, Johnson holds a different perspective, expressing to the BBC during the “Moana 2” premiere, “Go ahead and sing! After all, you’ve spent your hard-earned money for a ticket, entered a musical, and now you’re immersed in it. So, sing!
“Especially if you love music, that’s the fun part,” he added.
A representative from AMC Theatres, Ryan Noonan, informed the Indianapolis Star during “Wicked’s” debut that the cinema chain kindly requested audiences not to join in singing during the musical film to minimize any disruptions during screenings.
AMC always enforces a rule against disruptions in their cinemas,” he explained to the press. “The ‘Wicked’ preshow ad, which requests silence, is a playful way of reminding viewers to respect the movie-watching experience and avoid disturbing others.
As an enthusiastic admirer, I was thrilled to learn from EbMaster that Universal Pictures would be offering a special sing-along version of “Wicked” on Christmas! In these screenings, we’re invited to join in the singing, creating a unique and entertaining experience. However, until then, it’s best to refrain from singing during regular showings to ensure other audience members can fully enjoy their experience as well.
As a movie critic, I found myself in the midst of the “Wicked” press tour where the enchanting Ariana Grande was asked about audience members joining her harmonies during the film. In response, she graciously acknowledged that it’s understandable to feel moved enough to sing along. However, she gently advised, should someone hurl popcorn, their phone or any other item at you while doing so, perhaps it would be prudent to pause your performance for a moment.
“Wicked” is now playing in theaters nationwide.
