Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) are leaving the mountains of Montana for a fresh start in Texas. They’re building a new life there with their son, Carter (Finn Little), though this wasn’t the original plan for the show.
We initially set the story in Montana, but a major shift occurred when we decided to move the characters to a completely new world. They previously felt like the rulers of their domain at Yellowstone, but now they’re entering a place where nobody knows them – only the viewers do. This anonymity, which came about after we first heard the idea, was a fascinating development. The biggest change, ultimately, was setting the new story in Texas.
The TV series Yellowstone always took place near Yellowstone National Park in Montana, on the sprawling Dutton family ranch. In the show’s final events, the Duttons sell much of their land back to the Broken Rock Reservation, and the remaining family members move to start new ranches in other locations. After their home is destroyed, Beth and Rip decide to rebuild their lives in South Texas.
Cole Hauser Explains the Challenges Ahead for Beth and Rip
The popular show Yellowstone has featured Texas before, with part of its final season filmed at the 6666 Ranch – a real ranch owned by the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan. But will the characters, particularly John and Beth Dutton, be able to adjust to life in Texas?
Beth and Rip are facing a big change of scenery, and it’s going to be quite an adjustment for them. As they explore their new surroundings and check out the competition, they’ll encounter some difficult people. According to Reilly and Hauser, this move marks a fresh start for the couple. Hauser explained that the show has been focused on Montana for nearly a decade, but now they’re expanding their horizons. Despite the challenges, the pair have a strong bond that will help them through anything. Ultimately, they believe that as long as they have each other, they can handle whatever comes their way.
You can start watching Dutton Ranch on Paramount+ with the first two episodes on Friday, May 15th. It will also be shown on the Paramount Network starting at 8 PM Eastern Time the same day.
