Duplass Brothers Productions’ ‘Penelope’ Heads to Sky in U.K., Ireland (EXCLUSIVE)

The coming-of-age drama “Penelope,” a production of Duplass Brothers Productions, will premiere on pay TV network Sky and streaming service NOW in the United Kingdom and Ireland. This decision comes after a distribution agreement with Fremantle.

The eight-episode series, produced by Mark Duplass (“The Morning Show”) and Mel Eslyn (“Biosphere,” “Room 104”), centers around Penelope, portrayed by Megan Stott (from “Little Fires Everywhere,” “Yes Day,” “Aftermath”), a 16-year-old who finds herself struggling with contemporary society. She’s attracted to the mysterious wilderness and embarks on a journey where she starts building a fresh existence for herself.

Penelope finds herself immersed in the fast-paced, tech-driven world of today, feeling its stress and demands keenly. Yet, she senses an emptiness, a discomfort she can’t quite articulate. On the outside, her life appears fulfilling, but on the inside, there’s a growing restlessness, a pull towards a different lifestyle.

Following an unexpected meeting with a wolf and a rabbit during a school camping excursion, the noise becomes deafening for Penelope, compelling her to act. When no one is observing, she slips away secretly. Without a clear path, she navigates through a sequence of interactions, covering great distances before sneaking into a National Forest. However, this is just the start of what will evolve into a lengthy trek through uncharted wilderness and Penelope’s pursuit to discover her role within it.

Among the stellar cast alongside me in this movie, you’ll find Austin Abrams, known for his work on “Euphoria,” “Dash & Lily,” and “Do Revenge.” Also gracing the screen will be Krisha Fairchild, recognized from films like “Krisha” and “Channel Zero,” and Rhenzy Feliz, who has starred in “The Penguin,” “All Together Now,” and “Encanto.

In September 2024, the series titled “Penelope” made its debut on Netflix in the United States. It quickly climbed to the top 10 TV shows on the streaming platform during its first week. Critics from The New York Times commended it as a “skilled amalgamation of humor and emotion,” while The L.A. Times deemed it both engaging and intellectually stimulating, providing a unique outlook on contemporary relationships. The Globe and Mail further applauded it as one of the standout productions of the year.

Eslyn and Mark Duplass expressed: “It’s wonderful to be surrounded by such esteemed company on Sky. Our production ‘Penelope’ has elicited an incredibly positive reaction globally, sparking conversations everywhere. We’re eager to share this story with audiences in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Jamie Lynn, executive vice president of co-production and distribution at Fremantle’s EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) branch, stated: “Sky is recognized for presenting daring and original narratives to its viewers, which makes ‘Penelope’ an ideal addition to their selection. The Duplass Brothers Productions possesses a remarkable talent for creating authentic, character-focused, and relevant stories. In today’s society where social media significantly impacts young people, it’s gratifying to witness a main character like Penelope who challenges norms and carves her unique path. We are thrilled for audiences in the U.K. and Ireland to engage with her narrative and follow her journey of self-discovery.

Penelope” is a production conceived by Mark Duplass and Eslyn, with the duo serving as executive producers alongside Jay Duplass (“Industry,” “The Chair”) and Shuli Harel from Duplass Brothers Productions. Eslyn is also responsible for directing the series and serving as its showrunner. Fremantle is in charge of worldwide distribution.
