Here comes a spoiler for “Dune: Prophecy”! It’s revealed that Desmond Hart (played by Travis Fimmel), the warrior character, is actually the secret son of Tula Harkonnen (portrayed by Olivia Williams). This makes him half Harkonnen and half Atreides.
But there were hidden hints revealing his identity from the get-go.
At a recent FYC event, showrunner Alison Schapker disclosed an intriguing Easter egg woven into the series from its inception. This subtle detail, she explained, would ultimately unravel the character’s connection to his mother and reveal his true identity. She hinted, “In one scene, he approaches the palace with a small piece of black fabric. Throughout the season, viewers are left guessing about the origin of this item, but it serves as a tie to his mother.
During the panel led by Jazz Tangcay, senior editor at EbMaster’s, one of the major disclosures occurred. Schapker was accompanied by Emily Watson (Valya Harkonnen), Williams, Fimmel, producer Jordan Goldberg, costume designer Bojana Nikitović, set designer Tom Meyer, and visual effects supervisor Michael Enriquez.

Williams explained that Desmond was likely to have a black cloth prop with him throughout the performance. She pointed out, “Anyone who has young children recognizes that the item you initially swaddle a child in is impossible to misplace or replace because they’ll immediately notice. This added a poignant continuity to the storyline.
The character Desmond Hart didn’t appear in any of the Dune novels, which only added to the enigma surrounding him for viewers. When it came to portraying this character, Fimmel expressed that he felt less pressure compared to his co-actors because there was a wealth of background material available from the TV show. Jokingly, Fimmel said, “I was fortunate. I only had to deal with mommy issues and a primal desire for love. And that role turned out to be one of the most effortless ones to play.
The story unfolds 10,000 years prior to Paul Atreides’ birth, focusing on two Harkonnen sisters who engage in a struggle against adversaries endangering humanity’s future. Their journey ultimately leads to the creation of what will later be known as the Bene Gesserit order.
Beyond just Easter eggs, there were elements of universe creation, such as an expansive desert terrain now iconic to the Dune universe, and ominous architectures that formed part of the enigmatic sisterhood’s compound.
One scene under consideration featured flashbacks with Valya showing Jessica in the icy lake during a snowstorm. The setting mirrored Jessica’s emotions and her state at that moment. As the scene progressed, the ice began to fracture, and dark snowflakes fell, symbolizing her inner struggles. Enriquez acknowledged this scene as challenging and one of the most intricate sequences in the series. “We had strong winds, part of the icy surface was constructed, and a storm was needed that encompassed not just white but black snow,” Enriquez stated. “We transformed the entire environment. What we initially had there was impressive for capturing the right lighting on Emily and Jessica, and then, eventually, we removed everything else and created a massive snowstorm around them.
Meyer discussed crafting the sets, explaining that they mirrored his creative process, and he described “Dune: Prophecy” as a grand tale filled with expansive universes. Yet, while envisioning his concepts, Meyer aimed for these worlds to feel authentic and tangible, eschewing the typical science-fiction aesthetic. He emphasized that these settings possessed a rich history; the palace’s stonework bore the patina of centuries of human touch, and the sisterhood’s architecture was meticulously constructed. Moreover, he mentioned that the columns, cornices, and other details in his designs lent an earthy quality to the production, while simultaneously presenting novel shapes and ideas that felt fresh to audiences.
The discussion concluded by peeking into what season two might hold, with a hint at what viewers could anticipate. In response, Schapker mentioned that the creative team is currently in its initial phases. “I believe you’ll see insights into various schools and we’ll introduce some of the other influential figures within the Imperium,” he added.
She subtly suggested more to come for fans, saying “If you’re a ‘Dune’ enthusiast and you’re curious about the Mentats or the Spacing Guild, then Season 2 is likely to delve deeper into the intricate Dune universe.
